OPENING NIGHT CINEMA EVENT and much more...
Hi ,
Welcome to the 3rd LOS ANGELES ANIMATION FESTIVAL Newsletter. Next week is our big Super 8 Cinema opening in Los Angeles. We're so excited about this and hope you'll join us! Buy your tickets now as seating is very limited.
So without further ado, on with the show…
SOHO CINEMA OPENING NIGHT - 08.16.24
Just one week to go. So join us next Friday, 16th Aug. 7.15pm 1089 N. OXFORD AVE., Los Angeles, CA 90029. Celebrate the Grand Opening of our new bi-weekly Cinema, the SOHO CINEMA CLUB in the heart of Hollywood.
As we mentioned last month we're screening several incredibly rare animated classics as part of their opening night event. The SOHO CINEMA CLUB will screen film only, in this case Super 8mm, and is a collaboration between LAAF and our sister festival HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST.
The opening night event will be a smorgasbord of classic animation and live-action shorts, commercials, openings, rare promos and digest features, all Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy themed. Many of which haven't been screened in a cinema for decades. So don't miss your chance to see these amazing rarities on the BIG SCREEN.
Included in the over 2 hour program is TIM BURTON'S amazing stop-motion short VINCENT (1982) and the hysterically funny (and way ahead of its time) BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA (1969). MARV NEWLAND'S classic features a visual gag that never fails to be a massive crowd pleaser.
Plus we're screening the rare cinema promo for the musical album WAR OF THE WORLDS (1978) designed/directed by NeoPlastic Productions in Los Angeles. These guys created the innovative trailer for Disney's BLACK HOLE (1979). A must see.
Early work of stop-motion animator/producer/director legend RAY HARRYHAUSEN will be screened, in the form or a highlight reel from EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS (1956). If you've never seen this before it's highly recommended.
We'll also be screening many classic animated cinema commercials from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Many rarely ever screened these days. And all projected in glorious Super 8mm film.
In the old days cinemas were also home to 'live' entertainment before and in between the classic films. At THE SOHO movie theater we're proud to present the live horror-themed mentalist, the INTERMISSION MAGICIAN! Be prepared to be stunned and amazed by his (we hope) awe-inspiring psychic powers from beyond!
Raffles, prizes, old-school usherettes, merch, special guests, neon-art, the best dressed cinema manager in town and the 'magic' of film projection!
This is 40 seat theatre. We've already sold half our allotted tickets, so it's advisable to purchase in advance.
1089 N. OXFORD AVE., L.A., CA 90029.

BIG SCREEN ROUND UP - LOS ANGELES
LA has so many great cinemas and a constant flow of repertory screenings. Here are four great animated classics that are playing throughout July on the BIG SCREEN. Click on the artwork for full details.
LAAF FILM DISTRIBUTION - FREE FILM
We firmly believe in all our festival entrants and winners. So much so that we began a film distribution arm of LAAF - releasing shorts and features on Blu-ray, DVD, Theatrically and Streaming through FILMFEST DISTRIBUTION.
This month let's celebrate one of the most innovative stop motion features ever made, Shengwei Zhou’s critically celebrated debut feature SHe. This powerful, stop-motion feature is a David Lynch-ian technicolor dreamscape. VARIETY’S Dennis Harvey described SHe as both “A major event” and “As accomplished and inventive as it is conceptually bizarre.”
Harvey continued, “SHe is so rich in eccentric ideas and aesthetic imagination" that there is "plenty to ponder in repeat views" as it "moves along at a brisk pace constantly sparked by vivid color and designs."
Currently streaming for FREE on TUBI. Catch it while you can. Click on the image below to watch. Your viewing supports everything we do at LAAF.
