APE PODCASTS, OUR MEETUP IS BACK and more...
Hi ,
Welcome to our 15th action-packed newsletter. Have we really been going this long? That's quite the achievement. Thanks for supporting us thus far. This week is our big Super 8 Cinema APES-ATHON in Los Angeles. We're so excited about this and hope you'll join us!
It's also our 5th Meetup, so join us in September if you can. Details below. And don't forget to click on photos and links for more detailed info on the articles below.
So without further ado, let's get on with the show…
PLANET OF THE APES Podcast
It's been a very busy few weeks here. I did my first Podcast to promote the SOHO CINEMA CLUB, particularly our PLANET OF THE APES-ATHON screening this coming Friday 30th August. The Podcast was called LAWGIVER. It was a lot of fun, especially as it was from the U.K, hosted by APES-fan and genuinely nice bloke, TOM ELLIOT. It was good to reminisce about our collective and APES-obsessed childhoods in the U.K. I even showed him a photo of my good self dressed as a APE from way back in 1975. It wasn't the best looking DIY APES outfit. But considering my non-budget, I still think it holds up quite well. Though I'm not sure about the sunglasses!
When we talked what was surprising was how much the U.K. embraced APES fandom back in the mid 1970s and continued to do so even into the 1980s. The TV series was especially popular, even though it failed to find an audience in the US, and was cancelled early into its first season.
The Marvel comic adaptation was equally popular, more popular than it was in the States. This resulted in the only PLANET OF THE APES FAN CLUB in the world. Which was of course based in the U.K. And this in turn lead to a 'Live" PLANET OF THE APES touring show. Featuring the characters from the TV series, Galen, the two astronauts, and archetypal baddie General Urko.
I never managed to see the 'Live' show, as it never seemed to travel anywhere near my home. So I was happy when TOM showed me some posters from the show (when it toured as part of an actual circus).
Speaking of 'Live' APES shows, we at the SOHO CINEMA CLUB are happy to continue this tradition of APES cosplay. With the appearance of our very own SIMIAN INTERMISSION MAGICIAN at the APES screening on Friday. We still have a few tickets remaining, so if you're in Los Angeles, grab some tickets while you can. We promise a really fun time will be had by all.
Raffles, prizes, old-school usherettes, merch, special guests, neon-art, the best dressed cinema manager in town and the 'magic' of film projection!
1089 N. OXFORD AVE., L.A., CA 90029.
