SHOCKS, SHIVERS, SUPER 8 CINEMA, MEETUPS and much more...
Hi ,
Welcome to our 10th action-packed newsletter. So much to talk about this week. We hosted a screening of the David Cronenberg classic SHIVERS (1975) at the star-packed SHOCK-A-GO-GO Film Festival, finalized our own repertory cinema (so excited about that), was back again at MONSTERPALOOZA (selling rare memorabilia and meeting old and new friends), and just finished our 3rd amazing meetup at the BIGFOOT LODGE.
BTW don't forget to click on the many photos and colored text for lots of cool links to trailers, movie clips and fun trivia.
So without further ado, let's get on with the show…
A GREAT TIME AT SHOCK-A-GO-GO 2024
LYNN LOWRY, MILES FLANAGAN and ALAN KOLMAN
Thanks to festival hosts BEN MILLER and ERIC S. EICHELBERGER for setting me up as moderator for the Q&A for the DAVID CRONENBERG classic SHIVERS (1975) last month at the SHOCK-A-GO-GO Film Festival (Fri. May 17 - Sat. 18, 2024). After the screening I chatted with the actors LYNN LOWRY and ALAN KOLMAN. ALAN was surprised at the interest the film had gained over the years, since it only received negative press and poor box office when it was first released in Canada. "It definitely didn't help my career at the time," he explained. "So much so that I moved to the US to pursue acting shortly after."
1970s UK Quad Poster for a re-release of both classics SHIVERS and RABID
I told him SHIVERS was a pretty big success in the UK and was featured in many contemporary film and genre magazines. It was described as a masterpiece very early on and was also regularly screened in the UK throughout the 1970s. Often as a double bill. Unlike in the US and Canada where it pretty much disappeared after its initial release. "Wish someone had told me that at the time," he joked.
Our Q&A after the film
I asked LYNN if she was surprised at the longevity of SHIVERS fandom, the massive success of CRONENBERG'S career and the fact that the film is now revered as a horror classic. "At the time it was just a job. No-one knew it was going to be what it is now." As for working with CRONENBERG, I asked her what was that like? Did she have an inclination of the success he'd have as a director moving forward? "I knew nothing of David at the time and had few expectations. David was great though. Very energetic and creative. We were all at the start of our careers. It was his first big film. And we just did the best we could. But it turned out well, didn't it."
Let's hope the SHOCK-A-GO-GO Film Festival returns to Los Angeles next year as I had so much fun.
MONSTERPALOOZA 2024
Our humble memorabilia table
Every year (for so many years now) we do MONSTERPALOOZA (at the Pasadena Convention Center), selling horror movie memorabilia we've been collecting over the years. And in the process we meet old and new horror-obsessed friends. Maybe some of you reading this came to our table to say hello or buy some cool vintage horror merch. If so, thanks.
I even sold my own KING KONG (1976) scrapbook that I made when I was 13 years old! 13?!?! Holy crap! Such a long time ago! Glad it went to one of our favorite and most loyal customers. Cheers.
We always have so much fun there. It's almost like our 2nd home. And thanks to Organizer ELIOT and his family and crew for putting together another amazing event. Below are some photos from the always fascinating and creepy MONSTERPALOOZA MUSEUM.

OUR OWN CINEMA - STARTS AUG 16
We've finally set up our own repertory cinema (holding screenings every week or so). Our new venue is called THE SOHO CINEMA CLUB. Named after the famous and at times sleazy film/entertainment district in London. It was home to the big Hollywood studios, post production facilities, strip clubs, coffee bars, pubs and private clubs. In the 1980s I went to college just round the corner from Soho (at St. Martins School of Art). Click here to see what it looked like during those years. So it seemed the perfect name for our new cinema. We'll be screening an absolute treasure trove of film (on amazing Super 8mm to begin with). And I promise you, you've never seen anything like the cinematic smorgasbord of rare horror and fantasy films on Super 8 we'll be presenting.
The Super 8 nights will be called SUPER 8 at THE SOHO. We'll have special genre guests too (you'll be shocked when you hear the calibre of talent we'll have) and will be screening a full program of Super 8 including original theater opens, classic and rare 70s and 80s ads, trailers, scope programs, select scenes from genre faves, promos, comedies, euro trash, and condensed/abridged versions of some of our all-time favorites!
If you've never experienced the madness and joy of Super 8 on a 16 foot screen, in the comfort of classic, blood red cinema chairs, with popcorn, sodas and cinema snacks on hand, then you can't miss our opening night extravaganza!
No-one does Super 8 like this! No-one has a bigger collection of UK, US and European Super 8 madness than we do!
The venue is THE EASTWOOD PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 1089 N OXFORD AVE, LA, CA 9002.
More details and tickets sales in the coming weeks. It's gonna be a Super 8 blast!
