Our Fall 2023 issue is on the way!

Nikki and I rushed back from our annual beach excursion to celebrate our anniversary just in time to get our Fall 2023 issue off to the printing press. Not surprisingly, we learned that keyboards don't work as well when inundated with sand.

With features on the Gauley River, a local craftsman's inspiring journey, chasing the golden hour aboard two wheels, the candy darter, a hydration physics mystery solved, and a photo essay about words lost in translation, this isβ€”you're not gonna believe itβ€”truly our best issue yet (but for real this time).

It's been a minute since we've had a mountain bike cover (the only other instance was our Summer 2019 issue with the legendary illustrated MTB cover (see below)), and we are stoked to feature Brice Shirbach's incredible self-portraiture work. Keep an eye out for our Fall 2023 issue, which starts hitting the street on September 12!

Remember back when...

...we had a radical illustration of a mountain biker on the cover of our Summer 2019 issue? Since it was the only other time we've featured mountain biking on the cover of Highland Outdoors, I thought it was worth a revisit.

This illustration was created by my best bud Gus Trauth, who co-owns MoreFrames, an animation studio based in Erie, PA. Gus and I grew up together, drawing all kinds of whacky things throughout our journey through childhood. Fortunately, Gus stuck with it and made quite a career out of it. Check out more of his work here.

Become our 400th subscriber and win a HO Swag Bag!

In our last newsletter, I made the plea to help us reach 400 subscribers. Fortunately, a few of you loyal readers heeded the call and got us oh-so-close to four-hundo (thank you to our new subscribers!). We were sitting pretty at 399 subscribers, and I was certain we'd reach what, for me, has been a major benchmark. And then just like that, a few year-long gift subscriptions reached their expiration date, and we are back to 393 subscribers.

So, to grease the wheels a bit, we're going to send an HO Swag Bag filled with a shirt, a hat, and a sticker pack to our 400th subscriber. With only seven subscriptions needed to get there, you've got a good shot at being lucky number 400!

And even if you're not the winner, you'll help keep the mag going. People often ask us how they can support the mag, and the answer is simple: become a subscriber! And if you're already a subscriber, thank you! We truly appreciate your moral and financial support.

Life on the Cranberry

Amidst the height of the pandemic, photographer Kevin Frick moved to a remote cabin along the Cranberry River to fully immerse himself in the hills and hollows of this gloriously remote and rugged wilderness.

Stay tuned for our next installment in mid-September, featuring a recap of our fall adventures in the Mountain State, and, hopefully, the announcement of our 400th subscriber.

Enjoy, and thanks for reading #westvirginiasoutdoormagazine!
