Spring Is In Full Swing
When the trilliums and ramps start popping, folks around West Virginia can exhale a breath of relief that Old Man Winter has finally relaxed his icy grip (unless you're in the highlands, we've got snow in the forecast!).
This is a time of emergence and renewal when many folks head to the wildlands to forage for Appalachia's cornucopia of early ephemeral edibles. If you're heading out to dig some ramps, consider giving this article a read for some great info on our wild ramp populations and sustainable harvesting techniques.
Fresh, green, and stinky, ramps are one of the early edible indicators that spring has officially arrived.
Nikki and I recently descended from the still-brown vistas of Canaan Valley to pay a visit to the Otter Creek Wilderness Area, where plenty of spring ephemerals and luscious mosses were popping up. We brought out the macro lens to capture the emergence of plant life - a spectacle of awe that only increases with intensity as we age.
