EXPO TALK TITLE: Design as a Vehicle for Spirituality
Speaking July 17th at 2:15 PM EST
Rui Vasques was born in Vitória, Espirito Santo, Brasil, 1988, but he was brought up in Coimbra since childhood. He studied Design, at IADE, Lisbon, where he did also the Masters Degree in Production Design, concluded with the award of "Best Course Student", and with the classification of 20 in his thesis-project "Eco-Village Community”. This work has been presented and is creating a huge critical mass in Portugal and abroad, and has opened opportunities for the world of Social Entrepreneurship, Permaculture Design and Alternative Economies, areas he teaches today at IADE – UNVERSIDADE EUROPEIA , Laureate International Universities, in his unit "Design for Society.
He is a professional teacher certified by IEFP, and he moves between the arts, permaculture and music, also he is an instructor of Slackline. Currently he is the founder and President of Live With Earth Association, for the Global Sustainable Development by Actions in Portugal, in partnership with the Torres Vedras Municipality, awarded with the European Green Leaf 2015, and the Green Destinations 2018 Award in the beautiful Serra do Socorro. In 2017 he was responsible for the organization of IFAC 2017 – International Festival of Art and Construction, for the first time in Portugal.
On his journey, he has developed projects and partnerships with well-recognized and impactful national and international organizations, in the areas of Circular Economy, Youth Projects and Eco-Tourism. In 2019, he received the Global Award „ Exceptional Leaders of Excellence“ at WEF Portugal – Women Economic Forum, as a recognition of the work developed since 2012, and the projects and brands he has created and coordinated. Rui is currently working on his PhD in Design, at IADE - UNIVERSIDADE EUROPEIA, IADE - UNIDCOM, with the support of FCT - Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

Design as a Vehicle for Spirituality
As a designer, eco-designer and permaculture designer, I believe that this discipline and profession is a powerful tool for shaping the physical and non-physical worlds. Between an art and a science, Design Thinking, and Systemic Thinking, are important aspects for developing the solutions for human, social and environmental problems, and opportunities.
In this presentation, I will share my journey and experience as a designer, artist and researcher, and how design is awakening in me many discoveries that I am bringing into my life and for the Planet Earth.
