Small Business Saturday Small Biz 100

Highlighting 100 small businesses, one a day for 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday 2024. For the last ten years, the 100 have not only received exposure on Small Business Saturday's social media channels and in the local and national press, but also joined the Small Business Saturday team in London at receptions in Downing Street, House of Lords and the Treasury Drum with the Chancellor of the Exchequer. PwC Building Public Trust Award for Impact in Social Enterprise

In partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, PwC recognises UK based social enterprises demonstrating excellence in impact reporting.


To enter, applicants must state how they demonstrate a positive social and/or environmental impact, as well as submitting qualitative and quantitative evidence to support their application. The winner receives a £5,000 donation and each of our two highly commended applicants receive £2,500.


To apply, applicants are asked to summarize their impact in no more than 500 words and to submit up to two documents as supporting evidence (e.g., impact report, financial statement).


Three finalists are invited to celebrate with PwC at their Building Public Trust Awards dinner in London on 12 November 2024. Thank you Harriet Saunders for sharing.

Social Economy Research & Development Grant Fund

West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Social Enterprise Growth Strategy Grant awarding and managed by the Barrow Cadbury Trust. Grant is to enable organisations to develop new products or services that will generate additional trading income. It cannot be used retrospectively on an existing product or service. A maximum of 8 grants of between £5,000 & £10,000 each will be awarded.


The final successful applications will be by a panel made up of people from WMCA and the Social Economy Task Force.


Eligibility:

●       Organisation must have a 'social economy' legal structure

●       Must be based in the WMCA area

Initial applications deadline: 14th June 2024

If shortlisted provide more information between 24th June and 1st July 2024, with final decisions 10th July 2024.

Home Office Invites UK Applications to New £3m Transition to eVisa Fund

The Home Office is offering grant funding to a wide range of civil society organisations from across the UK to provide direct support to vulnerable people as they make the transition from physical immigration documents to eVisas by the end of 2024.


Applications can be made either for a national support grant, which will be awarded to a single organisation in each of the four nations, or a community support grant of up to £30,000 each. These will be awarded to individual organisations, multi-organisation consortiums or partnerships that will deliver specialist support for a specific vulnerable group(s) regionally, nationally, or UK-wide. 

To be eligible, organisations must have at least two years’ experience supporting individuals with complex needs.


Applications will be accepted from the following types of organisations (not an inclusive list):

●       Charities

●       Non-Governmental Aid Organisations (NGOs)

●       Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs)

●       Private Voluntary Organisations (PVOs)

●       Civic Groups

●       Community Foundations

●       Community Organisations

●       Religious Organisations

●       Social Enterprises

●       Support Groups

●       Community Interest Companies (CICs).

●       Successful organisations will be those well-placed to provide trusted, community-based support for vulnerable and hard to reach customers, which includes but is not limited to:

●       People with a disability

●       People with severe learning difficulties

●       Adults with severe mental health conditions

●       Victims of domestic abuse

●       Older/Elderly people

●       People with poor literacy or English language skills

●       People who are rough sleeping, hidden homeless, statutory homeless, in temporary accommodation or at risk of homelessness.

Bids will be welcome from single organisations or multi-organisation consortiums and partnerships. (Local Authorities are not eligible for this funding.)

The first step in the bidding process is to register on the Home Office Jaggaer portal. Once approved, which takes about 24 hours, applicants will need to send an email requesting access to the required documents.

The Hinrichsen Foundation

Offering grants to charities and other organisations across the United Kingdom to support the performance of contemporary music, including the commissioning of new work, non-commercial recording, or publication.

There are two levels of funding available:

●       One-off small grants typically between £500 and £2,500 (for new applicants and former beneficiaries).

●       Larger projects or concert series generally £2,000 and over.

 

The Trustees will occasionally provide funds for research projects that are not being conducted under the remit of an academic institution. Multi-year partnerships may also be considered.

There are typically three application deadlines per year.

Cornwall Social Enterprise Fund

Focused on promoting long-term financial sustainability in social enterprises across Cornwall. It will do this by providing funding that will enable organisations to generate revenue which is distinctly separate from charitable funding. Applications from start-up and established groups are welcome where there is a strong focus on long-term financial sustainability.

Crowdfunder Cost of Living Resilience Fund

Provides match funding for social sector organisations running services to help people struggling with the rising cost of living. Service sector inflation remains high

The annual inflation rate fell to 2.3% in April 2024, down from 3.2% in March. However, inflation in the service sector only fell from 6% to 5.9%, due to businesses passing on some of the costs from the National Living Wage increase.

Support for high-growth start-ups in Scotland

The Scottish Government has announced extra investment to nurture high-growth businesses. The £5 million package will fund pre-start support aimed at stimulating the earliest stages of business creation. It will also include support to maximise the economic impact of university spin-out companies.

Women in Innovation Award 2024/25

Women within UK registered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can apply for a share of up to £4 million to develop their exciting and innovative ideas. The £75,000 grant also includes bespoke business support.

 

Innovate UK is offering up to 50 Women in Innovation Awards to women entrepreneurs within SMEs across the UK. The winners will receive a £75,000 grant and bespoke business support.

 

The aim of this competition is to fund and support a diverse portfolio of Women in Innovation Award winners who will be relatable role models for women from all backgrounds from regions across the UK who are solving a range of pressing societal, environmental and economic challenges in a variety of innovation areas.

Enabling Small and Medium Enterprises through Diversity and Inclusion

Join InterAct researchers at the University of Wolverhampton to learn more about how you can create a more inclusive, diversified workforce.


The first 'Enabling Small and Medium Enterprises through Diversity and Inclusion' event will examine how SMEs can provide suitable and welcoming workplace environments for disabled people through inclusive digitalisation. This event will share and discuss the findings of the project ‘Manufacturing a better world’, which has been investigating inclusive digitalisation by exploring both first-hand accounts of disabled people’s use of digital technology in manufacturing and experts' views. Many SMEs face skills gaps and challenges in attracting and retaining talent, and this session will provide advice on how businesses can diversify their workforce and attract new talent into manufacturing.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s Community Grants Programme

Part of NHS Blood and Transplant’s commitment to build support for blood, organ, and living kidney donation among Black, Asian, mixed heritage, and minority ethnic communities.

Total funding pot of £600,000. Three bands of grants upto £20,000 per year. The focus of proposed projects must be one of the following:

●       Deceased organ donation - applications encouraged from all ethnic minority communities to raise awareness of, and participation in deceased donation. Other forms of organ donation may be referenced in applications, but the focus must be on deceased organ donation.

●       Blood donation - due to clinical need, only applications will be considered for projects focusing on the Black African and/or Black Caribbean communities.

●       A combination of deceased organ and blood donation - applications jointly covering deceased organ donation and blood donation from all ethnic minority communities, but the blood element of any project must focus on engaging the Black African and/or the Black Caribbean communities and must be carried out in England.


Living kidney donation – applications encouraged from all minority ethnic communities to raise awareness of, and participation in living kidney donation.

Report reveals barriers to small business expansion

A report from PayPal has found that 64% of small businesses have not expanded in the last three years. Almost 70% of business owners believe their business has potential for growth if they could overcome barriers such as a lack of technical expertise and the economic landscape.


The report also found that 28% of business owners lacked confidence with online and social media marketing.

Boost Charitable Trust

Boost supports organisations that champion the disabled and disadvantaged through sport.

It is able to offer small grants (under £500) and larger grants (over £500)

The charity has previously supported a wide range of sports including Boccia, skiing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball.

Barchester’s Charitable Foundation

Barchester’s Charitable Foundation helps older people and other adults with a disability across England, Scotland and Wales.

It gives grants to help reduce isolation and loneliness, promote group activities and generally improve people's independence, mobility and quality of life. Grants range from £100 to £1,000 for individuals and up to £2,500 for community groups.


It funds:

●       Older people 65+

●       Adults 18+ with a physical or learning disability

●       Adults 18+ with mental problems

●       Individuals

●       Small community groups and charities.

●       Applications for named individuals must be completed by a third party, who knows the individual in a professional or community-based capacity. This could be a healthcare professional, a social or citizen’s advice worker or a charity representative.

UoB Elevate at The Exchange

Located at The Exchange, UoB Elevate is an incubator and business growth programme exclusive for University of Birmingham students and graduates. Through this space and support you can develop your own venture in an environment that fosters growth and enables possibilities beyond the established graduate route.


There are two parts to the application process. You will need to complete an online application form and if successful, you will be invited to pitch your idea to an independent panel.

Darwin Plus Local Opens for Applications

A UK government grants scheme that helps deliver long-term strategic outcomes for the unique biodiversity, the natural environment and improving resilience to climate change within the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs). Darwin Plus Local sits within Darwin Plus and supports small scale environmental projects exclusively in the UKOTs, with the aim of building capacity in-territory and contributing to local economies.


Round 4 offers grants of up to £50,000 for organisations, and £20,000 for individuals. Round 4 projects can last up to six months and should be carried out between 1 October 2024 and 31 March 2025.

A wide range of projects may be eligible for funding including, but are not limited to:

●       Capacity building such as training courses, upskilling, peer-to-peer learning initiatives and sharing of best practice among OTs and their partners

●       Pilot projects to test a proven evidence-based or innovative new solution in a specific area or with a specific group, to measure results and learn lessons

●       Enhanced protection and restoration of priority species, habitats, and landscapes and sustainable management of natural resources and activities (such as tourism)

●       Actions to combat and build capacity to tackle invasive alien species and improve biosecurity

●       Grassroots, community-based and locally led efforts to advance conservation action, build capacity and increase resilience or improve environmental quality

●       Policy work, which might include legal gap analysis or drafting and implementation of new legislation

●       Outreach and education, including to involve, build capacity and buy-in for conservation, and raise awareness among local people and diverse community groups

●       Actions to increase resilience to climate change and enhance sustainability

●       Enhanced data management and analysis with specific goals for embedding this to inform policy, management, and practice

●       Sustainable financing for conservation.

The Barchester Healthcare Foundation, also known as the Barchester Charitable Foundation, was established by Barchester Healthcare to reinvest into the communities it serves. Grants range from £100 to £2,500.

New planning rules for farmers

Under new planning rules, farmers are now able to convert agricultural buildings and land into new homes, sports facilities and shops without submitting a planning application. The amount of floorspace that can change from agricultural to "flexible commercial use" will also increase from 500 square metres to 1,000 square metres.

Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) Merseyside

Part of the Merseyside's Police Commissioner and Merseyside Violence Reduction Partnership (MVRP). Community groups, charities and third sectors can bid for a grant of between £5,000 and £25,000 to run projects and programmes over the next year which give young people the opportunity to gain valuable skills and qualifications, build their confidence and make positive decisions for the future.

Trafford Shop Improvement Grant

A capital grant scheme that can help new and existing businesses to grow in Trafford by providing a one-off grant to support the refurbishment of town centre retail premises. Green Advantage- Skills Bootcamp in Sustainability

A short course designed for business leaders, managers and professionals who want to consider the implications of climate and environmental challenges for their business or workplace alongside maintaining business performance and profitability. 


Green Advantage is funded for some attendees by the Government Department for Education via the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) as part of the Government's Skills Bootcamps.

UnLtd

Grants of up to £18,000 plus business support are available to social entrepreneurs that are looking to start or grow an existing social venture. The funding is being made available through the UnLtd the leading provider of support to social entrepreneurs in and around the UK.


UnLtd are committed to providing 50% of their awards to Black, Asian and minority ethnic social entrepreneurs, and/or disabled social entrepreneurs. To be eligible applicants need to be aged 16 or over, living in the UK and are looking to fulfil a clear social need and demand. The closing date for this funding round is the 30th June 2024.

Funding to Support Music and Heritage Projects Across the UK

Radcliffe Trust is offering grants averaging between £2,500 and £7,500:

Music - Classical music performance and training.

Heritage & Crafts - Development of the skills, knowledge and experience that underpin the UK’s traditional cultural heritage and crafts sectors.

There are typically rounds per year, with trustee meetings held in June and December. Groups can apply for both a Music grant and a Heritage & Crafts grant in the same funding round.

City Bridge Foundation

Small Grant support for projects and organisations that focus on greening and growing, working with older people, working with Deaf and Disabled people, working with the LGBTQIA+ community, and working with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.


Eligibility:

Charities with incomes under £200,000. Funding up to £20,000 per year for a maximum of five years. To give smaller organisations easier access to funding in the following five strands:

1) Environmental, greening and growing

2) Working with older people

3) Working with Deaf and Disabled people

4) Working with the LGBTQIA+ community

5) Working with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers

X-Forces Enterprise and the Start Up Loans programme have provided 3,000 entrepreneurs in the armed forces with funding and support to start a business. Since 2013, a total of £33.5 million has been provided in funding to support service leavers, veterans, reservists and military spouses.

BT Sustainability programme

Delivered by Small Business Britain in partnership with BT, is a free six-week CPD Accredited programme offering vital sustainability training to small businesses.

The programme starts on will help entrepreneurs understand and make the most of the incredible opportunities that sustainability can bring.


The weekly workshops will be recorded and uploaded to a private page of the Small Business Britain website, to ensure the programme is accessible to all.

NFU Mutual Charitable Trust

Offering grants for organisations working in agriculture, rural development, and insurance across the UK to deliver projects and activities across one or more of the Trust’s main objectives:

●    To advance the education of the public using research and dissemination of information concerning agriculture.

●    To advance the education of young people within rural areas.

●    To relieve poverty within rural areas.

●    To promote the benefit and social welfare of inhabitants of rural communities by associating together with the inhabitants and local authorities, voluntary and other organisations to advance education and leisure.

●    To promote research into agricultural-associated activities.

●    To advance the education of the public using research and dissemination of information concerning insurance.

Priority will be given to larger initiatives that would have a significant impact on rural communities, as well as initiatives in the areas of education of young people in rural areas and relief of poverty within rural areas.

Trustees meet twice a year to consider applications, typically in June and November.

Armed Forces Families Fund Early Years Programme

Grants of between £5,000 and £50,000 are available for projects lasting up to two years which help enhance early childhood education and childcare settings of young children from Armed Forces families.

Projects must clearly benefit Armed Forces families with a child under 5 by enhancing their access to high quality childcare and contribute to at least one of the following three outcomes:

●    Increased capacity at the setting to allow more Service children to attend.

●    Better learning environments for Service children.

●    Have provided appropriate training and development to staff to support Service children.

Applicant organisations must be based and registered in the UK, be a registered charity, a CIC, or a company limited by guarantee, or a local authority in one of the four countries of the UK. Private limited companies that have been registered, and been working in the Early Years sector, for at least three years can also apply.


There are two ways to apply for a grant under this programme:

●    Single Applications

●    Groups or Clusters

The Armed Forces Covenant Trust, which is delivering this programme on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, will hold An Early Years Programme Lunch and Learn webinar on 12 June 2024 (12pm-1pm). Registration is required and can be done on the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust website.

There are two funding rounds this year.
