Show Me The Money! Grants & Funding - Practical Tips & Support

Revised: February 2024

Hello wonderful people,

Another packed issue! This month’s top tip is to make more use of your universities & Higher Education institutions. hibretOne has received £100,000’s of business support from universities like Aston University, University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University, University of Law, University of Ulster, Warwick University, Coventry University. Some students are better than others, so if you’re pushed for time let the institution do the shortlisting.

Kicking off our programme of showcasing brilliant placement student’s, demoing features on the hibretOne platform, is the tech wizard Ryan La. Studying BEng in Mechanical Engineering with Computer Science at University of Birmingham. Every month they’ll do a 60 second demo of 1-2 features.

Ryan - https://youtu.be/KZaD0hD3mOg

A few of our students are close to finishing their studies & will be seeking employment later this year. So if you want to increase neuro-diversity in your talent pool checkout my uni contact list.

A new report called the Lilac Review came out this month, so we’ve included a number of disability (different-ability) grants in this issue.

Finally, if you’re a social enterprise become a member of BVSC & signup to their newsletter. Thank you Ian Henshaw for sharing. Some great information including some grant funding resources.

Stay amazing, stay courageous

Top Tips for New Subscribers:

●       If a grant or programme is not in your region, many funds listed are for the W Midlands. Google search the keywords within the grant, as the programme may be running in your area, under a different name.

●       Speed read till you find something of interest. Some of the grants have a short window for applications.

The Power of The Right Interns & Work Placements

I’ve used the minds & skills of amazing students to test features, some have worked, many have failed. Some students needed a lot of support, some were great from the beginning keeping me up-to-date with the latest advances. One of the BCU interns mentioned a little-known application called GPT3. A couple of calls, emails to San Francisco & we were on the OpenAI beta, 9 months before ChatGPT’s global launch.

Contact these wonderful people for interns, some students are fully-funded by the institution, which means you don’t have to pay anything.

This is according to research by the London School of Economics which found that investing in energy infrastructure, transport, innovation in new technologies such as artificial intelligence, and the natural environment would boost the UK's economy rapidly.

The wealth of the world’s five richest men more than doubled since 2020

Since 2020, these billionaires’ net worth has skyrocketed 114% to a total of $869 billion, after taking inflation into account, according to Oxfam’s annual inequality report, released Sunday. If current trends continue, the world could see its first trillionaire in a decade.

At the same time, nearly 5 billion people globally have become poorer, as they contend with inflation, war and the climate crisis. It would take nearly 230 years to eliminate poverty based on the current trajectory.

Most local authorities have not spent SPF allocation

Funding allocated to local authorities under the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) has been left unspent. Around 95% of local authorities that received SPF funding in 2022/23 have not been able to spend all of their allocation.

Across the UK, 43% of £429 million in funding was not spent and not a single council in the north of England, Scotland or Wales spent its full allocation. Potentially money with your name on it!
