Here’s the Time I Talk About Pronouns

Hi ~

One of the most significant truths my husband and I learned in our journey of understanding about the Scriptures was an understanding of pronouns.

I wish I could remember who it was who taught it, but it was someone on the internet, way back in the dinosaur age, probably the late 1990s. There were fewer websites back then, my friend.

This was one of those paradigm-blasting revelations. Here’s the upshot of it:

When pronouns are used in the Bible, don’t automatically assume they apply to you (as I had been implicitly taught). Instead, they refer to the writer, or the person or group the writer was speaking to or about. Understand THAT first. THEN you can ask, “Do I fit in this category? Am I the same as the target of this pronoun?”

This principle is foundational in understanding the Scriptures, and it’s one I use often in my untwisting.

There’s a whole chapter dedicated to it in Untwisting Scriptures Book #4 .

I had been taught to always apply every pronoun to myself, unless it was ridiculous to do so. Learning to step back from the pronouns and analyze them and see if they apply has helped make the Bible make so much more sense.

How about you? Are you familiar with the Pronoun Principle, as I call it? Is there a particular Scripture it has helped you with?

I would love to hear about it.

With you in longing to rightly apply the Word of God,

Rebecca
