A Lenten Message

Hello Friends,
We pray that your Lenten season is deep and meaningful. The photo is the sanctuary of our home church, Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church. Oh, that crown of thorns!
We are halfway through the 40 days of Lent, leading up to Easter. During this season Cheryl and I play music for worship that we hope best communicates the characteristics of this journey to the cross. While it is natural to think of violin and piano music as sweet, melodious, and sometimes big and bright – we lean into the expressions of lament, sorrow, and even agony when choosing music for this time. Sounds that are dissonant, raw, mysterious and ethereal bring out the theological depth of Lent.
In our personal reflection and lament throughout this season, we do know the end of this story, and that makes it possible to live with rejoicing hearts! The hymn, “Man of Sorrows, What a Name” is also known as “Hallelujah, What a Savior!” It recaps the story of Jesus’ obedient path to the cross to save us. Cheryl and I recently played a moving arrangement of this at a local church. Verse 5 brings the blessing of His final glorious outcome to our hearts, filling us with humble gratefulness: “When he comes, our glorious King, all his ransomed home to bring, then anew this song we’ll sing: Hallelujah, what a Savior!”
How are you leaning into Lenten themes?
Lenten blessings to you,
Renée and Cheryl
