core belief

Hi ,

I firmly believe that everyone does the best they can with what they have. This especially includes our kids. So often, kids get dismissed as lazy, argumentative, or overly emotional (and I'll admit, I fall into the habit sometimes, too!), but it's so important to remember that they're just people. People do well when they can, and if they're struggling, it's because there's a disconnect somewhere.

What does this look like in real life? I try to look for solutions with my kids. Now, my kids are wildly different from me, so I'm often floundering as I try to figure out what they need. But when my kids leave a task half-done or miss one entirely, I try to remember that they're not trying to make my life more difficult. It's probably because their ADHD brains missed those details.

I also try to remember that, as frustrating as it can be in the moment, the fact that my kids feel safe enough to talk back to me is actually a good thing. Raising confident kids is not easy and it's not for the faint of heart, but I know the long-term results will be worth it.

What are some of your core beliefs? Do you agree with me? How do you handle these moments and manage to keep your cool (at least some of the time)? I know I could use more tools in my toolbox! Until next time,

Happy Gaming!

P.S. I've been featured on Homeschool Quest twice lately! Check out my article on taking a break while homeschooling (all the articles in this issue look great, btw) and you can check out my step-by-step guide on how to create a unit study based around a game! (The full printable is only $1 and includes sheets on the scientific method, essay and creative writing organizers, and grading rubrics; standard sheets I include in every unit study but are so helpful!)
