Hello ,
Greetings! And as of this week, welcome to Fall (or Autumn), whichever you prefer!
I'm freshly returned from an Alaska cruise... a much-needed vacation after a busy summer at work, a time to catch up with family, and recharge. The great thing about the Alaska cruise was that while there were all the "cruise" activities, eating, entertainment, even more eating, etc...there were some great excursions.
We sailed from Seattle, up the coast of Canada and through the Inside Passage. The weather was cool, but not bad. For this SoCal native, Alaskan weather in September approximated the coolest of our winter days! But as you'll see in the pictures below, the cooler weather gave me a chance to bundle up, which I rarely get to do in SoCal.
The highlight of the cruise was our port stops in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria. In Ketchikan, we saw a silly but fun "Lumberjack" show, but also found a creek bustling with salmon trying to swim upstream. It's one thing to see it on TV, but another to see it right in front of your face! In Juneau, we saw the Mendenhall Glacier and an amazing waterfall. That night we attended a wonderful outdoor salmon bake. On the last day of the cruise, we also got to see several pods of orcas swimming off the stern of the ship!
My favorite stop was in Skagway, where we took a shuttle inland to a sled dog training camp. Once there, they placed us on 800lb wheeled contraptions and pulled us through the forest by 16 sled dogs during their summer training season. The best part though was after the ride when we got to meet the dogs and even got to hold sled dog puppies!
This little (huge) guy is only six weeks old and fell back asleep the second he hit my arms!
Novel Notices
Editing continues on Birthright. Right now I'm concentrating on two chapters in particular that needed some reworking to increase the dramatic tension (can't make things too easy for the characters) and help set up some plot points for later in the series.
August and September were busy and full of distractions, so editing time was limited. This is the first weekend in about six weeks that I don't have anything going on, so I'm hoping to get back into a more normal routine (multiple hours per day on the weekends and an hour or two each night).
I'm scheduled to meet with Jeff Brown in October on the Mechhaven Omnibus Edition cover. Very exciting!
