Dear ,
A Promising Step Forward for Our Music Programs
I am thrilled to share some promising news with you. Dr. Erik Swanson, our superintendent, has acknowledged the critical role of a strong music program and has committed to expanding it. It's no secret that his first year has been filled with challenges, but he's ready to tackle the issues facing the Guam Department of Education head-on.
Over the past year, we've had numerous discussions with Dr. Swanson about what truly benefits the students of Guam. With his background in music, he understands the undeniable value of quality music education. He knows that statistically, music education enhances math and reading scores and boosts student enthusiasm for school.
Recently, with the unwavering support of our dedicated GFT music teachers and leadership, Dr. Swanson met with our music educators. He listened to their concerns about the decades-long neglect of our music programs—teachers have been reaching into their own pockets and organizing fundraisers to repair and replace broken instruments. Dr. Swanson has assured us that he will allocate funds to address these issues, marking an important first step in revitalizing our music programs.
As many of you know, during our past two contract negotiations, the GFT has long advocated for the inclusion of music, physical education, and art in elementary schools. We were told it was impossible, but as Bob Dylan famously said, "The times, they are a-changin'."
While some may view this as a less critical issue given recent test scores, it's crucial to recognize that proper music programs have never been fully implemented for all elementary students. Let's not say it can't be done; instead, let's work together to make it happen. The joy and mental well-being that music brings will benefit our students and our entire community. While long-term results may take time, the immediate joy experienced by students will be palpable.
I thank our dedicated music teachers and Dr. Swanson for their commitment to this cause. I look forward to celebrating our achievements and listening to the fruits of our labor in the Union Hall.
Together, everybody wins!
In solidarity,
Tim Fedenko
GFT President
