Elevate Your Life Through Emotional Mastery
Managing your emotions is the key to taking control of your life. If you struggle with self-confidence and feel stuck, one thing I can tell you is this: when you manage your emotions, you gain the power to move forward and achieve what you want.
In this piece, we’ll discuss ways to elevate your life through emotional mastery control so you can build yourself up and become the person you want to be.
Refuse To Let Your Emotions Make Decisions
Allowing our emotions to decide for us is one of the biggest reasons we get held back. I remember when I was promoting my book, “Overcoming Your Empty Closet,” at a speaking event, I had an opportunity to let my emotions decide for me.
After my talk, an elderly man—very slim, about 85 years old—approached me and said, “Gene, you’re the most sophisticated colored person I’ve ever heard.” When he called me “colored,” I immediately felt anger. I thought, What kind of racist comment is that?
Instead of blowing up, I managed my emotions and responded by saying, “Sir, I’m not ‘colored.’ You can say Black or African American, or even better, you can just call me Gene.” He replied, “Oh, I didn’t mean any disrespect.” I said, “I understand. Thank you, and I appreciate you enjoying my presentation.”
If you want to elevate your life, when you’re in situations where someone says or does something that makes you want to blow up, see it as an opportunity to manage your emotions so you can stay on the path to achieving your goals.
Now I know this isn’t easy, so I’ll give you three practical ways to elevate your life through emotional mastery.
3 Action Steps to Master Emotional Control
Emotional mastery is a skill, and just as you must train to improve your skill in a sport, the same is true for mastering your emotions. Here are three action steps you can use to develop your emotional mastery skills.
1) Assess Your Emotional Triggers: Identify moments when your emotions get the best of you. Write them down and reflect on how they affect your progress.
Then sit down and visualize situations in which you are prone to let your emotions get the best of you so you are prepared to control them when they occur.
The more you practice mentally controlling your emotions and executing calm responses when they arise, the more skilled you will become at emotional mastery.
2) Don’t Focus on Negative Thoughts: There’s an old saying: where your focus goes, your energy flows. When negative thoughts try to take over, you must shift your focus. If you don’t, those thoughts will continue to fuel your emotions and lead to an outburst.
Practice counting down from 10 to give yourself time to calm down and refocus on something positive, such as reminding yourself that the situation is an opportunity for you to grow in your emotional mastery by taking control of your thinking.
The more you practice taking control of your thoughts when situations arise that cause you to become emotional, the more skilled you will become at emotional mastery.
3) Keep a Journal of Emotional Mastery Skill Development: Keeping a journal is the best way to self-reflect on your emotional mastery progress.
A journal lets you record moments when you wanted to tell someone off or even hit someone, but instead chose to control your emotions.
Seeing that progress will encourage and motivate you to keep developing your emotional mastery skills. So I recommend that every Sunday you spend 20 minutes reviewing your emotional wins from the week.
