Be Authentic With Your Gift
If you've ever had someone tell you that you need to change who you are in order to use your gift, then you're not alone. Even though many people believe in the power of their gifts, society often tells us that we need to change in order to be successful. However, this isn't true. You can be successful using your gift as you are, so it's important to be authentic with your gift.
When I first started my journey in public speaking, I had many people tell me I had to change who I was if I wanted to realize my dream of becoming a Professional Motivational Speaker. "Gene, you need to sound more like you are from the Midwestern than from the hood. Gene, you need to say your "E"s and "R"s. Gene you need to wear a suit at all times. Gene, you need to stand this way, say it that way, be like this, and on on on on!!!!!! Because I lacked self-confidence and I had a low self-worth, I tried to do everything they told me. It was very frustrating because my gift stop feeling natural and started feeling like a robotic act.
Trying to please all these people became exhausting so I decided to hire a professional speaker who was at the level I desired to be instead of listening to those who never gave a professional speech in their lives. The speech coach I hired was named Albert, he was one of the top Motivational Speakers in the Country. His storytelling skills were amazing but what really stood out to me is how successful he was with his deep Ghana ascent.
During our first call he asked "Gene, what does you expect to get out of our coaching sessions." "Well I'm trying to speak more Midwestern or in a way that will allow me to be a successful professional speaker." "HAHAHAHAHAHA! Who told you that crap?" "People in a speech organization I'm in." "Gene, you will never become a professional speaker by being inauthentic on stage. The bigger the audience, the more they will see through you. Do you now people told me the samething. Actually my own wife said "How are you going to be a Professional Motivational Speaker with that ascent?", I ignored her and pursued my dream. Do you know what she says now "What?" "Albert the only reason you are successful as a speaker is because of your ascent. HAHAHA!" "That's interesting."
"Gene the reason I've been a successful as a speaker for the last 20 years is because I'm authentic with my gift. If you want to make it in this business, you have to be as well. So throw that Midwestern crap and anything else those people told you that you need to change about you, and start being authentic with your gift."
That's exactly what I did; I stopped pretending to be someone I wasn't and started speaking from my heart. I also let my true HOOD personality shine through! Today, because of that change, I am a Professional Motivational Speaker and my speaking skills have surpassed those of the people who told me, I needed to change.
The same thing can happen for you if you decide to be authentic with your gift when people tell you to change who you are, be authentic with your gift when your lack of self-confidence, and be authentic with your gift when you have low self-worth.
How to know you are being authentic with your gift?
1. You are using your gift your way and you feel at peace.
2. You are learning from others without trying to be others.
3. You are standing up in your own truth about what you believe you should be doing with your gift. For example, I believe I was given my speaking gift to motivate others as a Motivational Speaker; so therefore I wouldn't let others pressure me into becoming a Pastor.
Remember that your gift is something special and unique to you. Don't be afraid to be authentic with it, and let it develop your self-confidence and self-worth because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!!
