STOP SEEKING DREAM PERMISSION
Have you ever waited for someone to give you permission to pursue your dreams? Many of us have been guilty of this.
We often spend too much time seeking approval from others. Overcoming this need for validation can be challenging, so let’s discuss ways to overcome it.
The Power of Taking Action
When I first envisioned becoming a motivational speaker, I held back. I recall countless times when I promised to take action on my dream, but struggled to do so because I sought validation before proceeding.
After feeling frustrated with my inaction and settling for a job that I knew was below my potential, I wrote a resignation letter to give to my manager.
I hoped she would tell me it was okay to pursue my dream.
However, every time I went to the office to hand over the letter, I became afraid. I worried about her telling me I was making the wrong decision because I was seeking her validation.
This cycle repeated over and over; in fact, it continued for an entire year.
When I finally went to the office and handed in my resignation, she said exactly what I expected.
She said, “Gene, I think this is a bad idea. You should stay here. Most people who pursue a dream end up returning to their job because it doesn’t work out.” However, she added, “Besides that, I have to tell you, I admire your courage for pursuing what you truly want in life, and I wish I had that same courage. So, I wish you well.”
You see, I made that decision without her validation, and because I stopped waiting for permission, I realized my dream.
Don’t wait for anyone else’s permission to chase your dreams. Instead, go after them. To help you overcome any desire for others’ validation, I’ve provided three steps I’ve used to help you do so:
Step 1: Worthy Decide
First, decide whether your dream is worth pursuing for you. If you don’t believe your dream is worth it, you will seek the validation of others.
This decision is the foundation of everything, so once you have convinced yourself that your dream is worthy, you must make a commitment to go after it without the permission of others.
Step 2: Stop Seeking Approval
Understand that you don’t need anyone else’s approval to chase your dreams. The only validation you need is your own.
When you stop seeking permission, you free yourself from the need for others’ validation.
Step 3: Take Consistent Action
Merely wishing for something won’t make your dreams come true. To pursue your dream, make a plan to take small actions consistently today without seeking input from others.
Realize Your Potential
If you want your days of seeking validation for your dreams to be over, remember that you have the power to believe in yourself and take action without it. So, I encourage you to pursue your dreams without seeking permission because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!
