   When Things Don’t Work Out

Feeling like giving up because something didn’t go your way? You’re not alone. Many of us hit walls that shake our confidence and make us question our worth.

But here’s the truth: setbacks happen for a reason, and NOT tying your self-worth to your disappointment is the key to keep going.

When Dreams Shatter, Self-Doubt Creeps In

You’ve been grinding—putting in the work, believing in yourself, visualizing success. Yet, the thing you hoped would change your life falls apart.

Maybe you didn’t get that promotion, lost a job, or a dream felt out of reach. Suddenly, all the effort feels wasted, and the voices of doubt get louder.

You wonder if you’re cut out for your dream and if you should give it up.

I dreamed of playing in the NBA when I was 11 years old, and I trained relentlessly, shooting hundreds of jump shots, dribbling for hours, and lifting tons of weights for years.

But after college, I had a major setback that destroyed my basketball dream: slipping down some stairs and injuring my knee, which led to knee surgery and crushed my NBA dreams. That moment left me discouraged and depressed, making me question my self-worth.

Be Patient and Reflect

It’s tough when you’ve tied your self-worth to disappointment. For me, that is what I did with my basketball dream. It was a mistake that led to a breakthrough.

I learned to be patient with myself and how to self-reflect.

While recovering from my surgery, I asked myself, “Who am I without basketball?” It was a tough question that didn’t have an immediate answer. But I didn’t give up.

Years later, a setback in my corporate career pushed me to improve my public speaking skills, which became my purpose.

Being patient and taking time for self-reflection helped me realize that my value is not determined by my disappointments; instead, those setbacks provided the insight needed to help me find my purpose in life.

By reflecting and trying different things, I was able to discover my purpose when things didn’t work out, and I believe you can do the same.

Here are three things you can do to find your purpose when things don’t work out in your life:

1) Practice Patience: When things don’t work out, resist the urge to give up. Use this time to pause and reflect on your strengths and passions beyond your current setback.

2) Ask Yourself Powerful Questions: Who are you without your current identity tied to your goal? What other talents or interests have you overlooked? Write new possibilities and explore them.

3) Take Small Consistent Actions: Build your confidence by stepping out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s joining a speaking club, learning a new skill, or networking, each step honors your worth and moves you closer to your purpose.

Conclusion

When life knocks you down, you face a powerful choice: surrender and believe you’re not worthy of your dreams, or rise up with unstoppable courage, knowing that every setback is proof of the incredible strength and potential inside you.

The power to decide is in your hands alone. So, I urge you—stand tall, believe fiercely in yourself, and recognize the unshakable value you carry within you because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!
