The Bait Society Uses to Hook Your Mind
Brain about to be hooked!
,
I heard this real cool story the other day.
Two young fish were swimming side by side when an older fish swam toward them deep within the ocean.
When they got close.
The older fish asked, "How's the water boys?"
They remained silent.
Once they passed the older fish, one asked the other, "What's water?"
You see, the younger fish neither knew nor understood their environment.
That meant they were unaware of the hooks humans could throw into the water to catch them.
I like this story because it reminds me of how I saved some college freshmen from a hook.
I was a Resident Assistant (RA) in college. (A fancy title for dorm hall rule enforcer.)
I had 60 freshmen assigned to my floor.
One day, 25 of them were standing in the hallway, waiting for the elevators.
"What are you guys up to?" I asked.
Peter, a slim white male with red hair, said, "We are going to get some free hamburgers."
"From who?"
"Check out this flyer."
I read the flyer and knew exactly what they were about to get into.
"You should come with us Gene."
"I will, but I will pay for my burger."
"Why would you pay for something that's free?"
"You'll see."
We got to the burger place.
Walk in.
The aroma of sizzling burgers filled the air as nearly 100 college freshmen waited in line.
Booths staffed by men and women in corporate shirts greeted students at the line's start.
Before reaching the booths, I explained to the guys why I would be paying.
"Guys, listen up. These booths belong to credit card companies. They want to hook you into debt by giving you a card in exchange for a free hamburger. It seems harmless, but if you spend freely, that will be the most expensive burger you ever had. That's why I'd rather pay."
They all paid!
You see, in that environment, I was the older fish. I understood those companies' hooks, so I was able to help prevent those freshmen from making an impulsive decision.
