When I was substitute teaching at this middle school, there was a slender 11-year-old boy with dark brown hair and hazel eyes walking around with his shoes untied. No matter how many teachers told him to tie them, he just wouldn't listen. I figured his disobedience was the result of him not knowing how to tie his shoe so I was puzzled when none of the teachers volunteered to help him. I wanted to help the kid but I didn't want to offer my help in front of others because that would embarrass him if he didn't know how to tie his shoes.

Later that afternoon, the student was passing me in the hallway as I was walking back to my class after lunch. He still had his shoes untied so I said "I noticed your shoes have been untied all day." "I like them that way." "Are you saying that because you don't know how to tie your shoes. If so, I can teach you how to tie them." "I know how to tie my shoes Mr. Mosley I just choose not to." "Why is that?" "Because anything that is tied to you in life, can control you. Have a great day Sir."

He walked away as I was dumbfounded by his answer. Though it did not make logical sense for him to walk around with his shoes untied, it did make sense philosophically. You maybe thinking to yourself, "Gene, how does this 11 year old statement make any sense philosophically?", I'm glad you asked so let me explain.

Think of all the times that you've said to people "I want to do this" or "I will become that" but you have yet to act on any of those things. Why is that? I argue its because of what is tied to you. You see, many of us have tied ourselves to fear, self-doubt, disbelief, past mistakes, etc... and now one, if not all, of those are controlling you. You Tell Yourself you want to start a business, but fear tells you that you will fail, You Tell Yourself you will start a Youtube channel but self-doubt says no one will watch you. You never act because you are being controlled by what is tied to you!

So how do we untie ourselves so we can move freely towards our dreams like the middle school kid with untied shoes.

1. Acknowledge and write what we have tied to us that keeps us from acting on our dream. Is it fear, self-doubt, etc...?

2. Challenge our fear, self-doubt, past mistakes, etc... by writing out the positive outcome that WILL happen when we pursue our dream. I encouraged you to use the word "WILL" because it sparks belief.

3. Write out 1-3 small steps you can take towards your dream then schedule that step or steps on your calendar. I highly suggest you do this the same day or starting the next day. Make sure your step or steps are very small so you can get your some small wins that will help you build momentum towards your dream.

4. TAKE ACTION!!!!!!!!! I also encourage you to write down a positive "I WILL" statement on a index card or in your phone that you can look at every time fear, self-doubt, etc.... tries to control you because this will help you to untie these negative things from your life.

I'm sure you are tired of being controlled by whatever is tied to you. By following the four steps in this article, you can start untying yourself so you can start pursuing your dream because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!!
