It can be frustrating to have a dream that we never act on. We think about it day and night only to continue living in the circumstances we hate. We blame others, situations, and even God for not making our dreams come true. But the truth is, we only have ourselves to blame because we have chosen to live for someone else's agenda for our life. I've discovered that if we want to give our dreams a chance of being realized in our lives, we must take control of our own destiny.
In 2010, I experienced something that 8 years of college never prepared me for. My manager came into the exercise clinic that was employed and said "Gene, I don't know how else to say this but after next week you will no longer be employed with this organization due to budget cuts." "I'm being laid off?" "Yes. I'm sorry Gene, we have no choice." She walked out of the clinic so I could let the cold harsh reality set in. When my shift was over, I got in my car and started driving home. I had a mixture of sadness and anger. "How dare they lay me off after all the work I've done! I'm the only Exercise Physiologist who did aerobic classes which brought in an additional 100 members. This is the so stupid!" For most of the night, I had this victim mentality. I blamed my frustrations on my employer, my circumstances and God.
In the back of my mind I knew I was burned out of that job and I was planning on leaving in 6 months. You see, I had a dream of one day owning my own business because I did not like having someone else's agenda controlling my life.
When I got to work the next day, my manager was waiting for me. "Good morning Gene, our CEO wanted me to come check on you and see how you are doing. Since you know that we can't keep you here pass next week. Do you have any plans on what you will do?" "Not really." "I'm sure you will figure something out. The CEO wanted me to ask if you were thinking about starting your own business that's similar to this one?" "That has never crossed my mind. Why would he ask that?" "Because he feels you are the type of guy who can start a business and do very well and he wanted to make sure you are not planning on competing against this organization." "He really thinks I can do that. Absolutely and so do I. You are extremely creative and ambitious." "That is great to hear but I don't want to compete against this organization, plus I wouldn't know how to anyway."
My manager left after that brief and awkward conversation and it was in that moment that I realized that I had the power to take control of my own destiny. If a seasoned CEO was threatened by me, someone who has never owned or operated a business, that was a sign that if I put my mind to it, I could take control of my own destiny by becoming the CEO of my own company as well.
Six years later, after doing my own research, working with coaches and mentors, and developing my communication, marketing, and business skills. I launched my corporation, inGENEious Motivation, LLC and I'm now the CEO who's in control of his own destiny.
You will only live once, so it's important that you get in control of your own destiny by divorcing yourself from someone else's agenda and start living your dream. This means taking the time to figure out what you want out of life and what makes you happy, and then taking steps to achieve your dream.
