Don't Choose Dialing for Dollars Over Your Dream. I know you might be thinking to yourself, "Gene, what do you mean by that? That makes no sense whatsoever." Well, I promise by the end of this conversation, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
When I worked as a telephonic health coach at a wellness corporation, there was this lady named Susie that I was really cool with. Now Susie was a very persistent individual. She was 55 years old and had a dream of becoming a nurse.
SHE FAILED 10 TIMES
She was determined to get out of health coaching because she was tired of "Dialing for Dollars" as she described it. What I didn't know about Susie is that she had already taken the nursing exam 10 times and kept failing. One day I was talking to Ms. Susie and I said, "Ms. Susie, I heard you have taken that nursing exam 10 times."
She responded "Yes, I have, and I will continue to take it till I pass it because I will be a Nurse and I won't let anything stand in my way." A month later, she took the test for her 11th time and failed again. But that did not stop her because she made plans to take it again in a couple of months.
The week before she took her test again, I went to her cubicle and asked "When you pass the test this time, what are your plans?" "I'm going to apply to every hospital in this area, in home care, you name it. Wherever I can start being a nurse."
SHE FINALLY DID IT! I THINK?
The following Monday morning, Ms. Susie came to my cubicle and said, "Gene, I passed! After 10 years of school and failing the test, I'm finally going to be a Nurse!" "That's amazing news, Ms. Susie! You deserve it because you've worked so hard all this time. Have you been applying for Nursing jobs?"
"Yes, of course, Gene. I've already applied to 5 different hospitals, 10 in-home services, and I'm even looking into working for non-profits if need be. It doesn't matter to me where I work as long as I can stop "Dialing for Dollars."
Three months had passed, and I noticed Ms. Susie was still at her cubicle "Dialing for Dollars". So, I asked, "Ms. Susie, how is your job hunt for nursing positions going? She replied, "Gene, I've been applying everywhere. Nobody has given me an opportunity yet, but I am steadily applying because I am going to be a nurse."
SUSIE'S RETIREMENT PLAN ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK!
Ms. Susie was still at her cubicle after four more months had passed. I wanted to check in on her progress, so I asked, "How is the nurse application process going?" She looked up at me with a sad expression and said, "Gene, I haven't sent out a nursing application in 2 months." "Why not?" "I've come to realize that Nursing is not meant for me, so I'll continue to "Dial for Dollars" and retire from here."
DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE
Ms. Susie made a mistake; a mistake a lot of people make. She gave up on her dream when she was close to achieving it. She chose "Dialing for Dollars" over her dream and one day she will regret it.
That is why it's important that you "Don't Choose Dialing for Dollars Over Your Dream." This doesn't just mean working over the phone, but anything you choose to settle for over your dream.
Therefore, I urge you to do whatever is necessary to achieve your dream. "Don't Choose Dialing for Dollars Over Your Dream" because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!
