People always have something negative to say about others. They will find something wrong with you with the hope that their negative comments can keep you from achieving your goals and dreams. Don't let them get to you, instead keep moving forward by not letting their negative comments stop you.
I was subbing at a high school and a slim freshman student with dark brown hair and green eyes was walking towards me. He normally talked to me about basketball so I anticipated that's what he was going to do. "What's up Mr. Mosley, have you played any basketball lately?" "I have not." "How about you?" "I have. I got a question for you. Were you ever nervous to try out for a basketball team?"
"Absolutely but I didn't let that stop me. Why do you ask?" "We are having basketball try-outs next week." "Are you going to try-out?" "No." "Why not?" "I'm not sure." "I think you should because I've seen you play and I believe you have a great chance of making the team." "I kinda feel like that myself Mr. Mosley but the other day I was playing basketball with some of my friends who are on the team and they all told me that my game is garbage." "Do you believe your game is garbage?" "No! I'm actually a better player than most of them." "OK, if you don't believe your game is garbage, go try-out for the team and don't let any of their negative comments stop you." "I will!"
A month later, I subbed at that high school again and I seen that student during my lunch break. "Mr. Mosley, I made the team and I'm doing very well. I play more than my friends who were talking smack!" "That doesn't surprise me because most of the time the people who talk negatively about you are secretly threatened by your potential success."
People tend to talk negatively about others when they feel threatened or insecure. If listened to, this can have a negative impact on the person being talked about to the point that he or she gives up on his or her goals and dreams. If you're a person who tends to listen to negative comments, here are 4 ways to change that:
1. Recognize that people who are giving negative insulting comments about your goals and dreams are only displaying how they truly feel about themselves.
2. Set boundaries with those who are talking negatively about you. Don't let them control how you think or feel about yourself.
3. Stop discussing your goals and dreams with these individuals and put as much space between yourself and these individuals as possible.
4. Write out a short positive commitment statement to yourself that you can memorize, put on an index card, or write in your cell that you can read when someone says something negative about you. This will help you block out their negative comments with your positive comments about yourself.
It is important to be proactive when dealing with negative people. By following the four steps I've outlined in this writing, you can effectively stop their negative comments from stopping you from pursuing your goals and dreams because You Are WORTHY TO BE GREAT!!
