🐰 All You Need Is Money? | Paul Kingsnorth, Against The Machine Book Study: Part 4

🐰 Down The Rabbit Hole 🕳️
“When a plant is uprooted, it withers and then dies. When the same happens to a person or a people, or a planet full of both, the result is the same. Our crisis comes, I think, from our being unable to admit what on some level we know to be true: that we in the West are living inside an obsolete story. Our culture is not in danger of dying; it is already dead, and we are in denial. This, now, is the reality we have to wrestle with—and transcend.”
~ Paul Kingsnorth, Against The Machine, p. 21

LIVESTREAM AT 7:30PM (EST) TONIGHT (THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6)
Greetings, dear newsletter subscriber,
Our merch store is now open! Please check it out, share with friends, and support us in this way if you're able (see blue link, above)!
Have you ever felt like you’re living in a story that you didn’t choose? One that tells you to work hard, achieve, consume, self-create—and yet somehow leaves you feeling more isolated than fulfilled?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot, especially while reading Paul Kingsnorth and his reflections on Oswald Spengler. He argues that a culture is shaped by the story it tells itself. And right now, the story most of us are living in is one of hyper-individualism and self-sufficiency. We are expected to build our identity on our own, build our life on our own, and become our own meaning.
No wonder so many of us feel lost.
In this week’s video, I explore how we got here — and what it might take to find a story that leads to community, connection, and something deeper.
We began the livestream of our book study last Thursday! We will be discussing Chapters 3 & 4 this evening at 7:30pm (EST).
Join us on the Gadfly Academy YouTube channel - green link ABOVE.
In this week's video and blog post, I offer a reflection on Ch. 3 & 4 of Kingsnorth's book.
Even if you don't read the book, and just join us for the discussion, I'm sure you will find it of interest!
You can find the full schedule on this week's Substack post:
Hope to see you this evening! Have a great weekend, and we'll see you again next week!
Warmly,
Herman
