When my publisher launched a series set in the fictional town of Willow Springs Vermont, I plotted out a story in my mind. A romance between a dead black civil war solider and a history professor from Scotland. While I was writing the romance, I discovered the clerk for the inn at the center of these stories was gay. I knew in my heart that I had to tell his story. Give him a happily ever after.
A year after my first story was published, the publisher gave me the green light to tell Jared's story. He had been in almost all the stories in the series, so he was well-known and well-loved. His reputation was being perpetually happy and cheery. I wanted him to have secret depths, though. A tragic backstory that no one knew about. A story he would only, in time, reveal to his love interest. And that love interest? I knew I needed a foil for this sunny man. I made Xander a world-weary war photojournalist who has come stateside after receiving devastating news. Two hurting men, finding each other.
Perfect.
Except...
The publisher put certain parameters upon the story. No sex and no swearing. They wanted a sweet romance. I thought, I'm a writer, I can do this.
Harder than I expected. I never realized how much I relied on male body parts and expletives in my stories. But I love a challenge, and within a month I had my book.
Then came the fight for length. The book was too long. My editor went to bat for me and they gave me latitude. That meant I could keep the animal shelter scene that has been known to cause the tearing up of some hardened readers. My sweet hurt/comfort gay romance released in the spring, and now it's out on audio!

The amazingly talented Michael Ferraiuolo narrated If Only for Today for me and I have to say he did a fantastic job.
(and there might be a cameo from the former ghost and history professor come all the way from Scotland...)
