I Don't Know

[A]mong those who've studied the needs of the evolving workplace from an educational standpoint...the consensus seems to be that this new world demands citizens who are self-learners; who are creative and resourceful; who can adjust and adapt to constant change.

→ Warren Berger, A More Beautiful Question

My three-year-old has a funny habit.

Whenever I ask him a question he isn't sure how to answer or to do something he struggles to figure out, he says, "You do it."

I wouldn't have thought the embarrassment so many of us wrestle with when faced with challenges or tough questions - & the subsequent desire to avoid those feelings entirely - would have their roots so deep. But there they are.

When it happens now, when he tells me to do the thing or answer the question, I'm teaching him instead to say, "I don't know."

I'm hoping, in the process of getting him to see that there's no shame in not knowing, that I might be reminded of it more often myself.
