Kia ora ,
The first Austen retreat in Coolangatta was a lovely time to connect with other Austenites but coming back to snow was not pleasant. Check out some feedback, artfully made into a postcard below:
I plan well in advance, while I have the ideas - and the energy to execute them. The 2027 Austen events are booked, and I've started mapping out the next two retreats.
Unfortunately, things don't always work out as planned. One of our speakers for next year has cancelled due to health issues, and the prospect of a potential UK retreat in 2030 means people aren't interested in the 2028 Australian one.
I over did it on retreat, the person meant to support me wasn't able to, and it's taken most of the month to recover. So I'm questioning whether I'll do another retreat, or even continue the Austen Society.
I don't plan to fail so I'm trying something new. Prior to each Austen event I'm hearing from speakers how they'd like it to go, then discussing with volunteers to get their buy in. It's more work upfront but should mean less stress on event days. If (that's a big if) there's another retreat I'll try a similar structure, perhaps have a draft outline for the week then get participants feedback.
To quote Mansfield Park
if one scheme of happiness fails, ...we make a second better
Here's to hoping the groundwork runs like clockwork because I care about the community I've created.
Ngā mihi,
Frances
Writing
The virtual monthly writing group is 17 August, I'd love to see you there :)
If you know any neurodiverse writers who sometimes struggle with writing you're welcome to invite them to book a call with me. I'm also really keen to speak with people who are writing Austen themed pieces, both fiction and non-fiction, to see where they get stuck.
Austen
The virtual monthly discussion group had a glitch tonight that I have to fix before we head into our next topic 'We Are Family' which runs till May, discussing all aspects of family relationships.
Next month the society has our lightning talks and the following month I may be in Featherston speaking at a high tea (more details to come).
Life Coaching
Last year I was on a podcast associated with the Disability Business Network and they've asked me to speak to the graduates of their business program next month.
I offer both in person and online life coaching.
Upcoming events
14 September Virtual monthly writing group
26 September Lightning talks: short talks about Austen in Wellington
28 Sept Virtual Austen discussion group: what if each of the novels was about the main family?
