The salesperson vs copywriter debate (Who’s more important?)

Hi ,
The success of any business is based on a conspiracy.
Here's what I mean.
I had a debate recently (not hard to find someone to debate with nowadays)...
About who's more important, a salesperson or the marketing material?
Marketing material is usually written up by those with copy skills.
Unless you're a solo operator (like me), usually, those are not the same people.
A seasoned salesperson takes pride in "making the sale."
Of course, because... he or she's a closer.
On the other hand, a copywriter who bangs out 7 emails, a VSL or TSL that leads to a low ticket sale or some high ticket booked calls that "T up" a salesperson...
If that funnel crushes it...
Of course they're gonna believe their skills are the $hit.
Both people have merit, but my argument...
NONE of them is more important than the other.
To me, most top performing salespeople are extrovert confident.
Most top copywriters / marketers are very much introvert confident.
Both might teeter on arrogance.
Both believe their own bull$hit level of importance.
The thing is arguing about that lacks bigger picture and contextual perspective
Neither would be very effective if you're talking to a prospect who...
- Isn't interested - no want or need for whatever you're selling
- Wanna do this MAYBE later
- Doesn't have the means nor willingness to make the purchase - no money
- Is not authorized to say yes by themselves
Trying to sell to people with the above attributes is brutal.
It becomes about convincing.
It's painful.
I dunno about you, but I prefer selling to people that have the exact opposite attributes.
- They want the thing (even better if they need it, imo).
- Now is when it has to happen.
- They either have the means or are willing to get creative to make this deal happen.
- They don't need input from anyone else to do this.
A salesperson that can "close"...
Or great copywriter that writes awesome marketing material...
Either can influence the situation, but...
Neither controls the person they're trying to sell to.
Salespeople are front line battlers.
Copywriters are like Air Force Bombers and Missile Launchers.
We can't forget what also matters is... who their up against and what's their objective?
Not sure that analogy makes sense.
Either way, if you want to do battle and make sales harder than necessary...
Be my guest.
By all means develop sales skills, copy skills or both.
I have.
But, what I've learned is
It's so much easier to try find and keep in touch with those that are more inclined to buy whatever it is you're selling.
Who you are selling to and what they're focused on is more important than whatever your skills.
That's the conspiracy.
Speaking of what they're focused on...
If you want to find oodles of folks that have all the most TARGETED eyeballs...
Massive amounts of attention, but...
They're not turning that attention into money very well...
