While the process of becoming lost is usually

"While the process of becoming lost is usually a lot of fun, the entertainment value diminishes rapidly once the act is accomplished."

--Patrick McManus--A Fine and Pleasant Misery

If you haven't read any of the Patrick McManus books of short stories about his comical adventures growing up in northern Idaho, you must rectify that as quickly as possible. Some of them are laugh-out-loud funny. Others just make you smile from time to time.

I hope you're giddy with anticipation for the announcement of the flash fiction winner. Don't worry. I'll get to it. First, there's this:

imageThis anthology, featuring my short story "Love under a Purple Sky," will be out next week, or so I'm told. I can't wait to read Lee Allred's story.

I still have another short story I'm hoping to get accepted for an anthology coming out in January, and I'm twenty chapters into my adventure book for boys.

On an unrelated subject, I think these hand-painted Christmas ornaments are beautiful. The blue is particularly nice.

In my reading pile, in addition to A Fine and Pleasant Misery, I'm enjoying The Men Who Lost America by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy, and Jack London's South Sea Tales. I recently finished Frederic Brown's The Fabulous Clipjoint and The Corsair by Lord Byron. I wrote my thoughts on these last two in the weekly blog.

On the subject of reading and writing, the winner of the flash fiction contest, as selected by those of you who voted on them, was: Robb Grigg's "Death and Candy" by a narrow two-vote margin. I did not have to cast a deciding vote in the matter. Robb can contact me to let me know which autographed book he would like--for those of you paying attention, that's two contests Robb has won--very suspicious. As for the rest of us, we can look forward to another flash fiction contest in February: not to exceed 350 words and featuring a space alien in the USA on Valentine's Day or Groundhog Day.

Most of my books are $2.99 right now, but they will be going up to $5.99 soon. Get them while you can.
