Ugh... how can you not know this?

Do you ever get frustrated at how people don't know things that are obviously common knowledge?

Ugh it's so annoying!

I mean, how can anyone not know the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist, right?

Actually, it's not that obvious to many people -- myself included.

Consider this. If you are in that industry, the difference is crystal clear to you. But to the rest of us, it's gibberish we don't understand.

I feel the same when I have to explain the difference between copywriting and copyright. It's clear as the blue sky to me. But to people who are not in marketing, sales or law -- sometimes it feels like explaining nuclear fission.

However, word definitions are just one of many things you might understand or know about, and other people in your social circle have never heard of.

You may not believe this example but it's actually true. I went on a date a few years ago...

An hour or so in, we started talking about hobbies. I mentioned investing, as that is one of my hobbies (yeah I'm a nerd), and all I got was a blank look.

The girl had NO IDEA that investing existed -- she couldn't comprehend the thought that I'm a part-owner (shareholder) in Facebook and other giant companies. Even less so when I started talking about index funds.

Not blaming her, she just hasn't heard of it until that point.

Same goes for me when my friend says, "he's a dentist, she's an orthodontist and I'm a dental technician". I was CONVINCED these were synonyms!

Onward.

Think about this the next time you get frustrated with people not knowing what you know.

And here's my action item for you: When somebody doesn't understand something that's common knowledge to you, explain it without judgement. Even do it multiple times.

But if they REFUSE to understand, then it's not your fault, you're off the hook.

The same way my grandmas keep shoving cakes and cookies down their throats -- despite the fact they already have diabetes type 2 -- and then complain they're in pain or that their blood pressure is high.

See you around,
