Not Every Elevator Conversation Is As Funny As This One
Jan 31, 2025 2:06 pm
Something funny happened the other day…
I was taking the elevator down from my penthouse when the doors opened on another floor.
A guy stepped in, looked at me, and said, “Holy—you’re Mikkel, aren’t you?”
As it turns out, he’s a newsletter subscriber, has been following my work for years, and even attended my birthday party a while back.
We had a nice chat. He asked if I lived in the building or was just visiting a friend, and I told him I’d been living there for nearly six years.
While not exactly a daily occurrence, this is not the first time I’ve been recognized here in Panama.
I get stopped on the street, get asked for a photo, and even receive emails from people who’ve seen me out and about.
Some have even snapped a photo of me at a café before sending me a message saying, “Hey, saw you here today!”
(which, if I’m being honest, is a little strange...)
But what really stands out to me is this: Panama is booming with expats.
It’s no longer just the tourist areas—you hear English spoken all over the city.
I see expats moving into local neighbourhoods, setting up businesses, and integrating into the community.
Every time I step outside, I meet more people who’ve packed up their lives and chosen Panama as their new home.
Expats aren’t just curious about Panama—they’re making the move.
If you’re one of the many expats who have made Panama their home, maybe I’ll run into you one day, too…be sure to say hi if you do!
Speak soon,
Mikkel
