A Pilot Stopped Me on the Plane… Here’s Why
Dec 17, 2025 6:28 pm
This past weekend, my wife and I took a brief trip overseas to see a concert and celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary together.
For our anniversary, I got us excellent tickets to go see her favourite Chinese singer live in concert, someone she has listened to since she was a teenager.
The trip and concert were fantastic, and it was a rare 36 hours or so when I was completely disconnected from the business and just got to enjoy some deserved time away from everything with my wife.
It was on the way back from our trip that I had a really interesting encounter….
So… at one point, I got up to head to the bathroom, and upon heading back to my seat, I heard a voice behind me saying, “Mikkel…Mikkel!”
It wasn’t a voice I recognized, so I turned around, and it was a Captain in uniform who was “deadheading” (repositioning to do the return sector of a flight), and it turns out he was a big fan of my work.
He’d been listening to podcasts and reading the newsletter for years, and we chatted for about 10 minutes or so… something I am super fortunate and grateful to have the chance to do with so many great, like-minded people.
Not only that…but he was extremely bullish about the rise of many more international flights coming to Panama, as this is an indicator of the massive increase in demand for commercial travel to my adopted home country.
Panama has a ton to offer visitors who come here to enjoy the various climates and vacation, and sure, some of these new flights routes with serve the “tourist crowds”, however, I highly suspect these new flights are primarly being set to serve the growing expat base here in Panama who have and continue to position themselves here be it, economically or physically.
My new Captain friend spoke about how he was inspired by the work we do here at Expat Money (he is even in the midst of working on his own Plan-B).
Given the current (and sad) political climate things remains such that any “voice” that is not moving in lockstep with the “collective narrative” is punished, thus, I am not going to tell you too much about new our pilot friend beyond the fact that he’s planning going to come to Panama in March for our second annual Wealth, Freedom and Passports Conference.
Though it has become a more common experience down here in Panama, I don’t usually get recognized when I’m out and about, travelling the world, but boy, is it cool to randomly bump into someone who has not only been affected by the work we do here, but who has actively shifted their career and life plans based on it.
Even when I take a few days off, work still shows up in my day-to-day. I like it that way—it’s what pushes me to create the best offshore content possible and help families and investors like you build stronger futures overseas, even if you’re just getting started and don’t have significant wealth yet.
Whether you’re already a millionaire or are still working hard toward getting there, a Plan-B is within your reach.
…you just have to take the first step.
Speak soon,
Mikkel
PS. I hope to see you all down here for the Wealth, Freedom & Passports Conference in March. It’s taking place over the 6th and 7th (and if you come in early, you can join us for a Paddle Tennis tournament on the 5th that we’re hosting). This in-person event is the absolute best way to meet your fellow community members, the Expat Money team and our trusted partners who will help you turn your Plan-B dreams into a reality.
