Is my 8-year old daughter a dangerous explosive expert?

Sep 27, 2024 8:20 pm

So yesterday, I flew with my family from Zagreb, Croatia, to Istanbul. I am on the last couple of days of my tour through Europe.

Going through security and leaving the EU was quite an experience.

First, the security decided that they needed to swab my 8-year-old daughter's hands for explosives. I understand not wanting to profile, but do you really think a white 8-year-old girl is going to be some undercover bombmaker?

Next, they took out an unopened bottle of water from the momma bag; we explained it was for making a bottle of formula for my 6-month-old baby.

They didn't like this at all and explained its not allowed because it was in a normal water bottle. So I poured it in front of them from the water bottle to the milk bottle, and suddenly, it was safe.

The water bottle ended up being a couple hundred ml too much, so I drank the rest of the water. Even after seeing me drink the water, she proceeded to test the baby bottle in some expensive-looking machine, presumably also for explosives...

As you can see, Europe is much safer due to the courageous dedication of these brave security specialists.

But the cherry on top, and the one that really made the whole experience just swell for me, was when the woman at security (after all her heroism with the above-mentioned initiatives) scolded me for not taking my wife's tablet out of my bag (I only removed the laptop as requested by their crack team of protectors).

She proceeds to take the iPad out and rescan the bags. I can't see what's going on as they are submitting 9 out of 10 passengers to this type of enhanced security.

The whole place is a complete zoo, so when she points over to the corner and tells me to go get my bag, I do so and get out of there, and am grateful I am not getting a colonoscopy next...

Well anyways, I just got a nice surprise when my wife went to unpack today.

They took the brand new iPad out of my bag, but didn't put it back in...

Meaning it's still at security, a 2-hour flight away, in a place I am unlikely to ever return to. Excellent, there goes a thousand bucks...

Once again, all in the name of keeping us safe. I would almost expect stupid behaviour out of a bunch of deadbeats like the TSA, but I am still surprised at how stupid and inept the EU has gotten with all the rules and regulations.

Croatia is a beautiful place, and I had a wonderful time, but critical thinking is at an all-time low in the world today.

Speak soon,

Mikkel
