Christmas day we hosted about 20 of my clients and colleagues at my home for dinner.

In one fashion or another, I have hosted Christmas dinners for the last 20 years, and I can’t think of a year we didn’t do it.

Of course, the home changed, the people changed, and even the country changed…

But no matter what, I always wanted to ensure all the expats had somewhere to go on Christmas.

Before we sat down to eat, I was asked to make a speech.

This year I spoke about a family of choice instead of a family by blood.

You see, being an expat is a choice; it is ultimately a decision to carve a new path for yourself and is making a choice about where you want to live, who you want to be with, and what responsibilities you will take on.

Going into my 23rd year as an expat, I have had a lot of time to reflect on the life I want to live and what makes the most sense for me.

I can honestly say, I am as committed today as I have ever been to helping expats succeed and live this lifestyle.

And as I said to everyone on Christmas day. Expats are my family of choice. I love the community we are building, thank you for being involved.
