Panama City Going All-In on Bitcoin?

Jun 06, 2025 11:22 am

The Mayor of Panama City, the place I have called home for the last five years and counting, is a huge fan of Bitcoin and has not been shy about bringing that enthusiasm into his governance of the City.

Mayor Mayer Mizrachi says he’s drawn inspiration from Nayib Bukele’s efforts to integrate Bitcoin into El Salvador's economy, and it shows.

In April, he announced an innovative plan that would allow residents to pay taxes, fines, and fees with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.

Mizrachi has also been advocating for a city-level Bitcoin reserve to stabilize finances and attract investors.

And just recently, at last week’s Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, Mizrachi dropped a bombshell of a proposal when he laid out the idea of allowing priority transit through the Panama Canal for ships paying with Bitcoin.

The Panama Canal handles 5% of all global maritime commerce and generates $5 billion in annual revenue.

Even a small portion of that revenue being paid in Bitcoin would be a game changer for both Panama and Bitcoin itself.

As a huge fan of Bitcoin myself, this is a truly innovative idea.

As an expat living in Panama and as an expat consultant, this only makes Panama even more appealing, as Mizrachi looks to position Panama City as a digital finance hub, rivalling Singapore or Dubai.

Panama is building a freedom-first economy, and for those of you who have already joined me here or are in the process of doing so, rest assured that moments like these are further validation that you’ve made an excellent choice.

The future for Panama is very bright indeed.
