There’s something controversial that my friend Olly always says to beginners when learning a new language.

Here it is…

“Don’t worry too much about grammar!”

And there’s a good reason for this…

When you’re a beginner, it’s tempting to study the hell out of grammar. Looking at all the rules. Practising the grammar till you’re blue in the face. 

This is because the traditional education system tells us that grammar is important. 

But that’s a problem. 

Because, for a beginner, other things are more important. 

Like vocabulary, for example. 

Or pronunciation. 

Being able to actually speak to someone in the country you are moving to.

So – beginners – don’t worry too much about grammar.

However…

When you get to an intermediate level, things change. 

If you want to get over the intermediate hump and become fluent in your new language and really take your expat journey to the next level, you need to start treating grammar in a very different way…

(Not everything though. Some stuff, you should still ignore!)
