Argentina: Not The Budget Paradise You Think It Is?

Mar 13, 2025 12:26 pm

I recently got an email from one of my Private Clients who just got back from Buenos Aires, and I wanted to share something interesting with you.

He and his family had a great time—amazing beef, fantastic Malbecs, and a top-tier Tango show. But here’s the downside… it wasn’t cheap.

For years, people have raved about how “affordable” Buenos Aires is. But on this trip, my client prices for many things were way more expensive than he had expected.

While restaurants were certainly cheaper than he was used to in Seattle, they were far more expensive than when he had visited Colombia.

Steak prices have skyrocketed by three to four times in just the last couple of years.

Tourist attractions as well were priced similarly to any other major city.

Yes, you can still get an incredible ribeye for $30.

But the days of Argentina being one of the cheapest countries in Latin America may be in the rearview mirror.

Argentina’s history of chronic inflation, unstable government, and rollercoaster economy is now beginning to come under control thanks to President Javier Milei's bold leadership.

But Milei is just one man and Argentina has a long, uphill battle before it can be considered as a viable Plan-B destination.

While the city of Buenos Aires has a lot of charm, my client put it best:

“I liked visiting, but I didn’t have the feeling that I’d like to live there.”

While Argentina certainly gets a lot of attention due to Milei, it simply doesn’t check the same boxes as countries like Panama and Paraguay when it comes to a Plan-B residency.

These countries have stable economies, investor-friendly policies, and a cost of living that won’t blindside you overnight, especially when considering their tax-friendly policies for expats.

I’ll continue to keep an eye on Argentina as it continues to develop under Milei, but for now, it remains a nice playground flag and place to visit, but it's not a place I’d recommend for a Plan-B.

Speak soon,

Mikkel

P.S. If you’re planning an offshore Plan-B in Latin America, learning Spanish will completely enhance your experience. I used Story Learning’s program to do this on my own time—without classrooms or boring grammar drills. They are having a special sale of 50% OFF their Conversion Bundle (Levels 1&2) beginning today at 12pm EST through Tuesday, March 18th at 11:59 PM PST. Instead of $394, it’s just $197. I highly encourage you to take advantage of this offer today.
