I quit drinking last year. Here’s why.

Feb 10, 2026 7:41 pm

Quick personal note.

A little over a year ago, I stopped drinking alcohol.

Not because I had a problem. I didn’t. I could have a glass of wine or a couple drinks and be fine.

But as the years go by, I’m responsible for more and more people—my kids, my wife, my household staff, my team at work, and a growing number of Private Clients and First Class Clients who are counting on me to be sharp and consistent.

The truth is: even “normal” drinking comes with a cost. Not always dramatic.

Sometimes it’s just being a little slower the next morning, a little less patient, a little less focused.

And I don’t have room for that anymore.

My words carry weight, and the work we’re doing matters.

I want to be on—every day—because the mission is bigger than a night out.

Which brings me to March 7.

If you’re coming to the WFP Conference (March 6–7), you’re invited to the birthday party. Full stop.

And as always, you don’t need to bring me anything. Your presence is the gift.

But if you’re the type who insists on bringing something anyway...please don’t bring a bottle of wine. Instead, bring a book for our community.

This year, I put together a 2026 reading list and turned it into an Amazon list that works like a registry, so once someone grabs a title, it disappears and we don’t get duplicates.

Here’s the list: [AMAZON BOOK LIST / REGISTRY]

If you decide to do it, here’s how to make it meaningful:

  • Hard copy (hardcover if possible)
  • Ship it to your house first
  • Write a short note inside the front cover: what being part of this community has meant for you and your family, then date + signature
  • If you’re coming to the party, bring it with you

If you’re not attending but still want to participate, you can send it to my freight-forwarding address in Miami:

One more layer to this: we’re building the Expat Business Center in Panama City, and we’re putting a real community library in the office—family, sovereignty, investing, taxes, legacy, the stuff that holds up over time. Physical books. Not screens. Not subscriptions. Not “updated” information that quietly changes. Your inscription makes each one part of the story we’re building.

Conference details (and to make sure you’re on the party invite list) can be found here: https://expatmoney.com/conference

See you soon,

Mikkel

PS. So that my team and I can get our final numbers in, ticket prices will be rising significantly on February 15th. This is to encourage any stragglers who are "waiting until the last minute." Last-minute additions put strain on both the team and the budget, so please do secure your tickets immediately.
