So my kid crashed a client call...and then it got hilarious

Aug 06, 2025 6:16 pm

You may recall that viral BBC clip from a while back where this political science professor’s two young children waltz into the background during a live interview...which is embarrassing enough…

And then his wife rushes in trying to get the kids out of the room, and the whole thing just turns into absolute (hilarious) chaos?

Oh man, I still remember the look on the poor professor’s face as he was trying to keep composed and not laugh (or panic) at the whole situation going on behind him.

Well, something very similar just happened to me…

Except it wasn’t the BBC, and it wasn’t my lovely wife who came to the rescue.

I was on a consulting call with a Private Client when suddenly, my four-year-old came barging into the room…

This is no big deal on its own; my Private Clients know I have kids and that I often take calls from home, and occasionally I’ll even bring the kids onto a call to say hi.

But then, before I could react, who comes running in right behind my child?

My father-in-law. Frantically trying to get a hold of my child. And speaking Chinese.

A sitcom writer couldn’t craft a moment this hilarious.

Imagine trying to hold a serious conversation about setting up an offshore Plan-B while an older Chinese man is running after a four-year-old child in the background, shouting in Chinese….

Luckily, my client had a good sense of humour, and we all laughed about it afterwards.

Comedy aside, it is moments like this that remind me of why I set my life up the way I have.

I didn’t build a life abroad just for the tax advantages—it was about creating the kind of life I wanted for my family.

For me, building a life where I can be around my family all the time, whether I am working or travelling the globe, has by far been one of the greatest benefits of the expat lifestyle.

I guarantee you that twenty years from now, I'll randomly think about this moment and laugh just as hard as I do while typing this email.

And you just can’t put a price on that.

Speak soon,

Mikkel
