Trump Slams Europe With Tariffs… Over Greenland?
Jan 19, 2026 12:06 pm
This past weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump sent out a "Truth" in which he went on a long, winding (and, admittedly, entertaining) rant about European countries' lack of support for his desire to acquire Greenland.
I'm not going to lie...I had a good chuckle at "they currently have two dogsleds for protection, one recently added"...
The end point was that he is placing a 10% tariff on a number of European countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands) starting February 1st.
Not only that...the tariffs will rise to 25% as of June 1st and will remain in effect until the U.S. has acquired Greenland.
Just...wow.
As I've discussed previously, I'm no fan of tariffs as a whole, and Trump's (or any politician's) willingness to use them for political purposes is just another confirmation of my thesis for having a Plan-B:
You cannot leave the fate to the whims of politicians. Period.
Just as Trump was sending his tariff demands, a big free trade agreement was being finalized between the EU and the Mercosur trade bloc of Latin American countries.
As one door closes, another opens up, so to speak...
If you've been reading this newsletter or listening to the podcast for a while, you'll know that, unfortunately, I see much of Europe and the EU going on a downward trend in the coming years.
But more trade opening up between different parts of the world can only be a good thing, so far as I'm concerned.
My adopted home of Panama is an associate member of Mercosur, which formally consists of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.
In fact, the trend of this region becoming more pro-business and more pro-trade is one of the primary reasons I decided to move my family and base my business here over six years ago.
I saw the direction so many of these countries were going, and decided this region was the future of freedom.
As the world order rapidly changes, many doors will continue to close...with opportunities abound for those who act before it's too late to make a move.
Speak soon,
Mikkel
PS. If you want to see why the future of freedom is here in Latin America, there is simply no better starting point than by doing so first-hand at our second annual Wealth, Freedom and Passports Conference. Secure your tickets here, and I hope to see you there!
PPS. My colleague Marc Clair and I discuss the likelihood of Trump succeeding in acquiring Greenland on this week's upcoming episode of the Expat Money Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favourite podcast app and tune in.
