Don’t Bury Your Gold In Your Backyard

May 12, 2025 12:21 pm

Good morning, everyone,

There’s a story I think about often, especially when the topic of precious metals storage comes up.

Years ago, while I was living in the Middle East, I had a conversation with a friend. His wife came from a nearby country that had experienced serious unrest—the kind where borders shift, rules change overnight, and families are forced to flee with nothing but what’s in their hands.

Her grandparents had accumulated a substantial amount of gold. We are not talking about a small stash here; this was much more than just a few coins.

Like many of us, they didn’t trust the institutions in their homeland. They didn't trust the banks or the government enough to keep it in the traditional system.

So they did what seemed like the smart thing at the time: they buried it in the backyard.

It was entirely out of sight. Safe from thieves. Protected from seizure.

It made perfect sense...until it didn’t.

When things turned ugly, they had to flee, fast.

They had no time to dig and no time to make a plan.

They crossed the border with nothing, assuming they’d return soon.

But they never did.

The land is gone. The home is gone. And that gold? Probably still buried under what is now someone else’s property, likely lost forever.

I nearly fell over when I heard how much it was. I couldn’t believe that all of that hard-earned wealth had just vanished from their lives in an instant.

And this is what I tell people: it’s not enough to own gold—you need to be able to access it when it matters.

Because here’s the thing…

You might think that holding precious metals in your personal possession is the safest thing you can do.

But the moment your country becomes unstable or you have to leave quickly, that gold becomes a liability, not a lifeline.

And try getting on a plane or crossing a border with a duffel bag full of metals, especially in a time of crisis.

That’s not security, but rather a customs nightmare.

This is why I help clients store their gold in offshore vaults in secure jurisdictions.

It's not just for prestige or peace of mind, but because these facilities are secured, insured, audited, and, most importantly, accessible in a time of crisis.

Real wealth protection isn’t about hiding things in the ground. It’s about having jurisdictional safety, legal access, and liquidity when it counts.

Offshore storage gives you that.

It’s the difference between hoping your wealth is still there and knowing it is.

Speak soon,

Mikkel Thorup
