What Happened in Spain & Portugal Should Scare the Hell out of You

May 02, 2025 12:21 pm

Earlier this week, Spain and Portugal—two supposedly "modern, first-world" nations—were plunged into darkness.

I’m not talking about a quick blackout or a regional grid failure. I’m talking about both entire countries losing power.

No Wi-Fi.

No mobile signal.

No traffic lights.

No trains.

No hospitals running at full capacity.

Everything—gone for the better part of 10 hours.

I was sitting at dinner in Panama while this news was breaking with a friend who lives in Portugal. He hadn’t been able to get in touch with his wife all day. She was back home, completely cut off.

Another friend’s kids were stuck at school. He had no idea what was happening and couldn’t even get through the gridlocked streets because every traffic light had gone dark.

This is scary stuff.

And here’s the kicker: Spain, which celebrated its first day of 100% renewable power on the national grid, was dealt a very rude awakening.

In Spain alone, solar made up 59% of their electricity supply. And when 15 GW of power suddenly dropped—60% of the country’s total demand—the entire Iberian grid collapsed.

Some are calling it a freak event. I’m calling it a warning shot.

Whether it was a technical failure or something nefarious, the result was the same: death, disruption, and an entire population suddenly realizing how fragile their system really is.

Seven people lost their lives in Spain that day due to generator fumes, fires, and total chaos.

So if you’ve spent the last few years thinking, “Things like that only happen in developing countries,” think again.

The Globalist-pushed green energy revolution may look great on paper, but as Spain just proved, if your grid isn’t battle-tested and ready, the lights don’t just flicker—they go out.

Energy self-sufficiency is one of the key factors smart expats look for when building their offshore Plan-B. This is one reason that energy self-sufficient countries like Paraguay (which generates all of its own energy and exports its excess) are climbing to the top of many of my Private Clients Plan-B lists.

Don’t leave the fate of your family up to the whims of politicians and their green energy schemes.

Speak soon,

Mikkel
