What a Russian Girl Told My Friend in Barcelona

Sep 05, 2025 12:06 pm

I have a friend who’s a bit of a digital nomad and was spending time in Barcelona, Spain, when he met a woman from Russia.

During their conversation, she opened up to him and revealed the challenges she faced back in her home country.

As she put it, life is pretty terrible for the average Russian at the moment, with high inflation and a rapidly increasing cost of living since the start of the war in Ukraine.

According to her, it is even a hassle to obtain a visa outside of Russia to live or even just travel to many other countries.

As my friend put it, “If they can sanction citizens of one country for the government’s actions, who says it won’t happen with your own country...for sure, a second passport is becoming essential.”

We call it a Plan-B for a reason…because Plan-A is just hoping the worst never happens.

This Russian girl was achingly regretting not having obtained a second passport before things became so difficult.

We’ve seen it for years…residency and citizenship programs keep getting more expensive, or disappearing entirely.

And it doesn’t seem like geopolitical tensions are about to cool down anytime soon, which only means more people from conflict zones will seek higher ground and try to find a way out.

This year alone, we’ve seen conflicts flare up between:

– Pakistan vs. India

– Israel vs. Iran

– Russia vs. Ukraine (year three… and counting)

You don’t want to wait until the circumstances in your own country, or, in the case of this Russian girl, the actions of your government make your own citizenship a liability.
