Two Big Things For Us - The Weekly Recap

Aug 27, 2021 3:01 pm

Dear Reader,

Two big things for us this week...

First, we just celebrated episode 150 of the podcast, wow, time flies! I started this almost 5 years ago and it has grown to a worldwide community of expats and expat hopefuls. Thank you so much for your support and tuning in every week to hear stories from expats around the world.

And second, I spoke on the phone this week with Jennings Wright and thanks to the amazing generosity of our subscribers, Ten Eighteen (who Expat Money is now an official sponsor of) has been able to grow!

As Jennings explained in her interview on my show, Ten Eighteen runs halfway houses in Uganda’s largest slum of Namuwongo in Kampala. At the current capacity, the crisis-intervention Ross House can accommodate three teenage mothers and their children for a 4-5 month stay.

However, thanks to YOU, they have been able to expand their facility on the current property. The Ross House will double its capacity to six!

Add to that, Skills for Life, the vocational school that trains teen moms and girls in hairdressing and tailoring, will be able to add an advanced tailoring class as well as a literacy class for the students (most have never been to school and don’t speak English, which is Uganda’s official language). And they’ll still have space to grow - you can subscribe to Ten Eighteen's newsletter at the bottom of THIS PAGE to learn more about their programs and how you can help.

Remember, 100% of donations to Ten Eighteen Uganda goes to the programs, and the average turnaround from donation to the program is 5-days.

And recently I was able to introduce Jennings and help to get Ten Eighteen's first project up on DonorSee, which is founded by our upcoming podcast guest Gret Glyer. This project will fund a small skills/one-day workshop for 5 teen moms/girls to learn to make liquid soap, shampoo, and samosas in order to start small businesses of their own immediately.

Thank you to everyone who has listened to the episode and supported our nonprofit of choice, you are amazing!

Okay, that's my update this week, now let's get into all the content :)
