The U.S. to BAN Dual Citizenship???

Dec 05, 2025 6:37 pm

It looks like at least one lawmaker in the United States has decided he is not a fan of dual citizenship… so much so that he has introduced a bill to ban it altogether for U.S. citizens.

Senator Bernie Moreno introduced the “Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025”, and I’ll at least give him credit for a straightforwardly titled bill, as its aim is exactly that: to make U.S. citizenship an exclusive benefit reserved only for those with no citizenship ties to any other country.

This would apply to current dual citizens, who would face the choice of either renouncing their foreign citizenship or losing their U.S. citizenship, as well as to any American in the future who voluntarily acquires citizenship in another country (which would constitute an automatic relinquishment of their U.S. citizenship).

This bill has little chance (next to zero) of passing or advancing, but it’s evidence of how easily lawmakers can float policies that would fundamentally curtail your natural right to freedom of movement.

The fact that a bill like this can even be drafted, titled, and formally submitted tells you that even ideas that used to be unthinkable are now entering the conversation… and that alone should concern anyone who values their freedom and global mobility.

While lawmakers in the U.S. entertain their little fantasies of restricting our freedoms, Panama is doing the opposite - the country is making it easier for foreign nationals to integrate by introducing a “special passport” for Qualified Investor Visa holders.

This special passport does NOT convey citizenship; rather, it is a step towards easier integration for expats who make the savvy decision to build their base in Panama.

And if somehow this Senator’s scheme were to see the light of day, U.S. citizens could still hold this special passport and use it as a travel document, without having to give up U.S. citizenship to do so.

The fact is, countries that make life easier for foreigners do not stay cheap or accessible for long… especially countries that boast a solid economic underpinning and a high quality of life.

Case in point: the minimum investment required to secure the friendly nation’s visa currently stands at 300k USD, but it is scheduled to increase to 500k USD next year.

When a country becomes more attractive and easier to integrate into, it eventually becomes more expensive to access.

That is the natural lifecycle of every good residency program.

…and Panama residency programs aren’t just “good.”

They are exceptional.

Panama is one of the last remaining countries where you can still secure a high-quality residency affordably, quickly, and if you have the right team to guide you through everything, it’s headache-free, too.

I’ve guided hundreds of families and investors through the process already (including my own, obviously).

Securing residency in Panama quickly (and without breaking the bank) is the very reason so many families and investors just like you have come to Panama to work directly with me, my team and my network of offshore service providers.

You can do the same (even if you still mistakenly thought this type of complex work was beyond you or is outside of your reach financially).

An international Plan–B is no longer a luxury; it’s a responsibility every family leader should be chasing down and securing for themselves and their loved ones.

…and the time to do that is now.

It is better to be a year early than a minute late when it comes to building a future-proof Plan-B.

Speak soon,

Mikkel

Mikkel or Mark - Here's a link (it's safe) to Mark Nestmann's almost identical comments regarding the dual-citizenship issue that Senator Moreno is floating out there. You may have already read this since you and Nestmann probably read each other's stuff. His is a little more detailed on the U.S. side of things than yours, so if you haven't seen this it may be helpful for you for future posts on Expat Money. If you don't trust simply clicking on the link then do the copy/paste thing into your browser to protect your system. -Keith https://www.nestmann.com/americans-lose-dual-citizenship-exclusive-citizenship-act?inf_contact_key=ade5eabfef54020e9d895a220c69f65c680f8914173f9191b1c0223e68310bb1
