I have to leave Istanbul now
Sep 18, 2023 11:16 am
Last day of our trip, and we are back in Turkey again; we fly out first thing tomorrow morning to Panama.
13 hours direct, Istanbul to Panama City. Thank goodness for Business Class!
Today we just had a last meeting with the lawyer about our immigration and citizenship by investment here. But there are a ton of problems with my case...
No one talks about it in the industry, so I might as well discuss it.
The more residencies, citizenships, offshore bank accounts, and international businesses you have, the more difficult it is to do even more.
We are now having problems as the Turkish government can not get their head around the fact that I am a Canadian citizen, but I don't have a Canadian marriage certificate (my Asian wife and I got married in Africa for a number of reasons that I might write about in a future post).
They want a Canadian marriage certificate, which doesn't exist. The lawyers said we might be able to get married a second time in Turkey, but then that meant we had children out of wedlock, which is a problem in a Muslim country, and we would need additional documentation from our come countries.
It's causing a massive headache, and so far, we don't have a solution; I am creative though, and will figure something out. Hopefully.
The moral of the story is to get yourself sorted with a Plan-B. It's important, no question about that.
But more, and more, and more, is not better...
At some point (I have been doing this for 23 years now), things are so complicated that it can actually hinder you from moving forwards.
It's why I set up my clients with only the most important things and cut out all the fluff and ego plays I see some of my competitors push.
At this point in my life, I do more of these things so I can test it out and be a more valuable consultant for my clients.
I don't "need" to keep doing this, but I do it because I want to help my people and also because I still find it fun, at least for now :)
Speak soon,
Mikkel
PS. I also have to head home to Panama because, in only two weeks, it's the Expat Money Summit 2023! There is still time to grab a complimentary ticket.
Come discover the most important pieces of going offshore, and cut out all the fluff.
You can grab your ticket here; the event is 100% online:
