The Rise of DeepSeek Amid Calls To Regulate It
Feb 10, 2025 2:56 pm
A few years ago, the idea that China could develop an AI model to rival OpenAI, Google, or Meta would have been readily dismissed.
Yet, here we are, as DeepSeek, a new AI platform just released from China, has recently shaken the foundations of the AI world.
It’s making waves not just because it performs at the level of top Western AI models but because it was reportedly built at a fraction of the cost.
While companies like OpenAI pour billions into AI development, DeepSeek claims to have built its model for under $6 million.
Make no mistake: DeepSeek's rise is more than a technological breakthrough; it is a geopolitical event.
I recently read an article by my good friend Doug Casey that explained how DeepSeek may disrupt financial markets and global stability.
I agree with him.
Besides the obvious market disruption to the current AI models of the Silicon Valley mega players, DeepSeek will certainly be seen by the U.S. and other Western nations as a potential national security threat.
So, how will these nations react to DeepSeek?
As you might imagine, they’ll react how governments react to things they fear: by attempting to ban them.
Just this week, two U.S. congressmen introduced the “No DeepSeek On Government Devices Act,” which would ban federal employees from using the app on government-owned electronics.
This early proposal is the first of what will surely be many attempts to limit and contain this technology and others like it that may emerge in the future.
The AI Cold War has only just begun.
I don’t know how it will all shake out, but I know I am already finding ways to protect my family and clients.
Speak soon,
Mikkel
P.S. The DeepSeek story is just beginning—but the bigger question is: Are you prepared with an offshore Plan-B regardless of which way the geopolitical winds shift? Let’s figure it out together in Panama during the Wealth, Freedom, and Passports Conference this March 14-15 right here in Panama City.
