Happy Mother's Day Healthy Sixers

The lilac bushes exploded in my backyard, filling the space with the full, intoxicating scent. They make me smile, and they make me pause every single day to think about where I have been in my life and where I am going.

My mum bought me my first bush in 2006. one month after I had my first miscarriage. The path to motherhood isn't always smooth, and I had the a back-country road journey - within one year, I had three separate miscarriages. I chose to numb my grief - alcohol, sugar, running half-marathons literally, and running metaphorically away from myself. In 2009, after the birth of Lily, mum split the lilac bushes into two - one was my past, the other my beautiful future.

Today is my 9 year sobriety date. I would love to tell you I had children, and then my life tidied itself up like a scene from Mary Poppins. I got messy in the end - and didn't want to be a messy, drunk mom. In the first few years of sobriety sugar was my drug of choice; some argue that sugar is the first addiction for many of us.

For those of you struggling with sugar, please know you aren't alone. The Healthy Six tips - never get hungry, eat lots of protein and fat, have energy balls and fruit to get over the cravings, are essential. As is water.

I tell you my story, because the lilacs, the blooms on the trees outside your own front doors, the stories behind you and the ones that you have yet to write, are your stories. They will be full of joy and sadness, of things you think you can't do and then the ways you surprise yourself.

Health isn't about numbers. We have always looked at the metrics of health - the number on the scale, the number of minutes we exercise. But I am going to argue over the next few weeks our health is about our feelings.

And feeling healthy feels really good.

When I imagined my my mum dying, I always thought it would be my Get of Jail Free pass to drink again. When it happened in September 2021, it was the last thing I wanted to do. I was a different version of me. I leaned into the pillars of the Healthy Six in my most difficult times. It wasn't easy. But it led me here.

Something led you here to the Healthy Six his time. Lean into that.

This week: We lean into the healers:

What are the healers? If you haven't started your probiotic yet, please start. Stock up on parsley, ginger, lemons, and Omega-3 rich food like walnuts, salmon and chia. Try to have something good for your gut daily.
