LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR GOAL-SETTING STRATEGY

Set A Deadline For Each Goal
Deadlines aren't bad. They help you organize your time. They help you set priorities. They make you get going when you might not feel like it.” - Harvey Mackay
Deadlines make our goals feel more practical. They also create a sense of determination. We are more motivated to take action when we know there is a deadline ahead of us. This why it pays to set deadlines to every goal. In some cases, the deadlines are preset in the goals. For example, someone decides to retire from paid employment and become a full entrepreneur at 45 or aspire to loose 10kg before December 2020. In both cases, the deadlines are already set. In other cases, you will need to set the deadline from the scratch in order to prevent the goal from remaining open-ended. For example, in 2017 I planned to go on vacation with my wife to Dubai (UAE). But that would not have happened if we did not choose a month in the year and the number of days to spend. Without the deadlines as regards months and date, that goal would have remained open-ended and may never have been achieved.
Deadlines keep us responsible to ourselves. They bring the needed discipline into our goals and help us ignore lower priority desires. As a result, we set milestones that ensure we stay on track. Using the example of my trip above, the milestones we set then were as follows;
a. open a domiciliary account
b. pay for flights (round trip)
c. apply for visa
d. acquire all other relevant travel documents (if any)
e. book hotel accommodation via online platforms
f. call and confirm reservations
g. book local flight to Lagos from PH (round trip)
h. get the right light weight boxes
i. Make a shopping list etc ( Note: these milestones are not in a detailed order)
These milestones ensured that the goal was achieved. You need to learn to do this with your goals as well for commitment sake.
