Create A Process That Supports Each Goal

What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Henry David Thoreau

Process is one key area that most people ignore in goal setting. Ignoring process is like embarking on a journey without a defined path of travel. You will become confused from asking many questions on your journey and may never even realize when you are off route. For example, if your goal is to bag an online MBA by next year, your process will likely include; getting the right course of interest, institution and scheduling a proper study plan that will not affect your routine.

First, identify your destination (beginning with the end in mind – which is one of the habits of highly effective people by Steven Covey), then create habits that ensure your success.

For example, suppose want to start your own business and leave paid employment at 45. After researching investment returns, inflation, assumed expenditures, you decide that you’ll need #5 million in savings to achieve this goal. The destination is now clear. With that in mind, you can now work backwards and formulate a process. Let’s assume that you are 30 now and earning #500,000 monthly, you will need to save #28,000 monthly for the next 15 years to accumulate #5 million naira by age 45. You now have a plan.

The next step is to develop the savings habit. Some people believe that process is more important than goals and as such goals should be ignored. But I strongly encourage you to focus on both goals and processes.

Ignoring goals and focusing on process alone will lead to failure and vice versa. This will be discussed much later in this course.
