Book Reviews

Do you write book reviews? Perhaps you have received an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) or have come to the end of a book and have found a request to leave a review of the book just read.

Reviews are important, as they help potential readers to decide if they might like to dip into the book as well, and are an important marketing tool for the author.

Knowing what to write can be challenging, but I can tell you what not to write.

• Don’t write a synopsis of the plot. The blurb is there to give an overview of what’s inside the cover;
• Don’t write any spoilers, i.e. saying who did it, or disclosing the solution to the mystery, etc. That spoils the reading experience for others. It also makes authors cry.
• Don’t feed the book description into an AI program and then just post that.
• Don’t cut and paste the same review for each book you read, just so you can continue to receive free copies. (yes, it happens)

So, what do you write? Something I hope that shows you have actually read the book. These are some tips:

• How the story made you feel;
• What you like about the author’s writing;
• Why the book/story matters;
• Your understanding of the vision of the book and how well the author achieved this;
• You can include quotes from the book;
• Any highlights from the book (without giving away spoilers); and
• What is your opinion of the book.

You don’t have to cover all those points, but thinking about what you have just read and writing a genuine response will also support your reputation as a reviewer. Above all, it should be an honest review. If there are constructive criticisms of a book, by all means mention them. I just ask that you be kind, acknowledging the time and effort that someone put into writing the book.
